Text: Revelation 2:20.
Intro: Today we continue our study on “that woman Jezebel”. Last week we looked in Judges at the events of the tribe of Dan and their corruption that started in the region that would later produce that woman Jezebel.
We considered the tribe of Dan and their removal from the list in the book of Revelation, and we looked at their turn to idolatry, and spiritual fornication in Numbers 17-18. If you remember last week we spoke briefly about Israel’s most beloved, and popular judge, Samson, and how he fell into the snare of that strange woman. It was his demise, and hindered his usefulness for the Lord. It is no coincidence that Samson was also born out of the tribe of ____________.
If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan. And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
Our study in Judges last week was the beginning of a very long fall for this tribe. A further study of this tribe Dan showed this week a tribe that was unhappy from the beginning with their inheritance (Josh. 19:47) claiming it was “too little for them”. So they went all the way up to the top of the nation, and took a portion of Naphtali’s inheritance. It was this place of stolen inheritance that became the birth place of demise for this once blessed son of Israel. This is also the region that produces that woman Jezebel.
Jezebel means: Baal _________________. (It gave the idea of Baal’s possession).
Ethbaal means: _________________ Baal. (Father and king of the Zidonians.) The Zidonians were from Zidon…
And in the thirty and eighth year of Asa king of Judah began Ahab the son of Omri to reign over Israel: and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty and two years.
When we consider the kings of Israel, the Northern Kingdom, we can gather them together in one bucket of idolatrous, backsliders, that lead the Northern Kingdom to sin, and their early departure from their inheritance. I don’t know if there was a competition, but when we consider the epitaph of Ahab, he set the bar lower then those sinful men that paved the road before him.
And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord above all that were before him.
What effect did that woman Jezebel have on the nations leader? (vs. 31) “…and went and ____________ Baal, and _______________________ him.”
And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him. And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.
Remember the Zidonians are the people that link us back to Judges where Dan had stolen that inheritance and made it their own. It is that region that the city of Dan is established.
And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
The fact: In the Old Testament, Satan used a ________________ woman called “Jezebel” to bring _______________ worship in to pervert the true worship of God in Israel.
God says in Revelation chapter 2 is that she seduced him...
But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.
And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.
If we look at how this began, it began with one man, one tribe, but through the seduction of that woman Jezebel upon the king of Israel, the seduced a whole nation.
And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
Ahab calls Elijah a trouble maker because God used him to prophecy that there would be no rain for three plus years. The reality is that those that stand on truth, and declare the word of the Lord in truth have always been called trouble makers…
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.
Look at how these prophets were and who supported them.
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.
Notice: That here and throughout history, that false religion has always had a close relationship with kings. Here the false Baal prophets, and the prophets of the groves, eat at Jezebel’s table.
So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
Do you see why the whole nation has gathered? Because what had began as the sin of one man, then became the sin of one tribe, then became the sin of a king, then became the sin of a nation.
And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Now with that understanding of that woman Jezebel, let’s go back to Revelation 2.
Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
Just as in the Old Testament we saw how Satan used that literal woman Jezebel to seduce the people into idolatry. In the New Testament, Satan uses a _______________ woman called “Jezebel” to bring Roman Catholicism in to pervert the true worship of God in Christianity.
Remember: How Micah took something that was pagan, and God said not to do, and put the name of the LORD upon it, and in their own minds, it was holy and righteous, and good. This is no different...
Why God names this New Testament system “that woman Jezebel” is because it is the same ______________ system of false worship.
In other words ________________________ of the Old Testament is Roman Catholicism in the New Testament.
Listen, the Jesus of today, that exists in the Catholic church, who by the way have replaced Him functionally, with priests who are called father… Isn’t actually the Jesus of the Bible, but what the Bible calls another Jesus.
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness: And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
