Introduction

Read
1. The Place (1:17-2:1)
“And” just a continuation of the story. Most famous section....
“The subject of the sentence is not the great fish, but ‘The Lord’” - Phillips.
3 Things > 1. “Yahweh” > God’s cov. name. Echoes God’s faithfulness (Heb 11:6). God gave Jonah a mission to do and God will see it is completed! Philippians 1:6“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” > God will see our sanctification to the end! (Rev 14:12).
2. “Appointed” > Heb “Assign” (Psalm 147:4“Who counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them.”) Like in v.4 “hurled” and like in v.9 “The God of heaven, who made the sea and dry land.” God is LORD over All!
3. “A great fish” > Interesting (Fish/Nineveh). Most focus part of the story. ID? “The fish is not Jonah’s punishment but his deliverance.” - Hoyt.
Heb. intertwine, “Stomach of the fish”
2. The Prayer (2-9)
Psalm/Prayer of thanksgiving. Define > Thanksgiving - “Gratitude directed towards God in response to God act in history.” “The use of this type of psalm is another example of the narrative’s penchant for ironic reversal. A thanksgiving psalm typically recounts a past danger, describes God’s deliverance, and offers thanks. Jonah is still in the belly of the fish, not yet fully out of danger. His situation calls for a lament psalm—a confession of sin or cry of distress punctuated by a hope in God’s future deliverance.” -FSB. Prayer is intentional communication with God and can be spoken or written. It is often petitionary in nature, though it may take many other forms, as well. Both the OT and the NT assume that God hears and responds to the prayers of his people.” - Lexham Theological Wordbook.
Jonah is thinking physical, but missing the spiritual aspect.
2-6a (-). 6b-9 (+). “Salvation belongs to Yahweh” (4x).
Sheol.
3. The Provision (10)
Providence - “God’s benevolent and wise superintendence of His creation.” LCF 5:1 “God the good Creator of all things, in His infinite power and wisdom does uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, to the end for the which they were created, according unto His infallible foreknowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of His own will; to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, infinite goodness, and mercy.”
Personal God
Creation listen to it’s Creator! (Mt 8:23-27).
