Opening Scripture:

Luke 9:23 NLT
Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.
Jesus instructs us that in order for us to be a true disciple we must be willing to deny ourselves daily…
For some of us denying ourselves can be the heaviest cross to bare and may seem impossible to do…
In order to deny ourself daily we must identify what it is that we need to deny within ourselves…
Often times we choose to be blindsided about what it is that God is calling us to let go of.
Majority of the time what we cling to the most is the very thing that is causing us to be at a distance from God.

What are you clinging to?

1 Corinthians 7:29–31 NLT
But let me say this, dear brothers and sisters: The time that remains is very short. So from now on, those with wives should not focus only on their marriage. Those who weep or who rejoice or who buy things should not be absorbed by their weeping or their joy or their possessions. Those who use the things of the world should not become attached to them. For this world as we know it will soon pass away.
Paul expands upon Jesus teaching that it is important to not over concern (attach) ourselves to things of this Life for it is here today and gone tomorrow.
We can not know what we are attached to or are clinging to if we fail to seek the Lord in prayer and immerse ourselves into the word of God and hide the word of God into our hearts.
It is very important for us to completely open our hearts up to the Lord and ask Him in prayer to show us the things that we have allowed to become a stumbling block in our lives.
We then Must take inventory and write down the things in which God is revealing to us…
For some of us we cling to:
- Our Marriages…. Putting our spouses before we put God
- Our finances… Worried more about what is in our bank account instead of completely trusting God for provision. Neglecting to help our fellow neighbor in fear of not having enough financial resources.
- Our Career… Obsessing how we are going to get that big promotion instead of Asking God for direction as to where He would have us to go. God’s ways are NOT our ways…
- Our Addictions… holding onto what satisfies our flesh instead of what is satisfying to our soul.

Let Go and Let God!

James 4:7 NLT
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
In order to deny ourselves aside from identifying the things in which we are clinging to we must then understand how to fully let go and entrust everything over to God.
So many reasons why temptation comes in like a flood in our lives is because we are putting to much focus on the enemy rather then putting our focus on God.
If we keep our focus on God’s word it will be easier to overcome the attacks from the enemy and defeat temptation.
Jesus is our way of escape from any temptation
But if we keep sin on our brain we will find it nearly impossible to over come the temptation
It is VERY important to shift our focus from sin to Jesus who overcame sin, hell, and the grave.

The Why…

When we let go and fully trust God we will not have any issue to giving freely.
When we live our lives fully depended upon God we will live a life full of God’s glory.
When we choose God’s ways over our own we will find much reward for our souls.
When we are more attached to God then we are to worldly things God can use us to become more of a blessing to those who are around us.
