This week: The Last Supper
We are 24 hours from the crucifixion… the last day of Jesus’ life - he had some things to teach his followers.
Perhaps the greatest lesson of all!
It was the time of Passover.
Celebration of deliverance from Egypt, how the death-angel passed over those covered by the blood on the doorposts.
They would eat the specially prepared lamb, having no idea that they were actually sitting with the Lamb of God.
They would sit at that table and eat the passover, having no idea that this was the last time that this ritual would mean anything!
They were rushing about, perhaps pushing and shoving a little bit trying to sit next to Jesus.
Ignored the obvious!
We talked about this a couple weeks ago when the sinner lady washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and dried his feet with her hair…
No one had washed Jesus’ feet.
Dusty, desert roads + sandals = dirty feet.
Custom was the lowest slave would be assigned to wash everyones feet as they came in the door.
Problem was no one was a slave… so everyones feet was dirty.
They ignored the pots of water by the door for the purpose because no one wanted to assume the role of a slave.
So… as they reclined at the table the dirty feet of their neighbor was in their face.
So they are sitting their with their feet in each others faces (the perfect picture of pride!).
Jesus had dealt with this many times…
Least will will be greatest, first will be last - he had taught this.
Yet here he is, sitting with unwashed feet again!
Teaches humility.
Takes a towel and wraps it around his waist and begins to wash the disciples feet!
What would have been going through their minds?
We know what Peter was thinking because like normal, he said it!
“You will NEVER wash my feet!”.
Jesus said if I don’t, you will have no part with me…
“Then don’t just wash my feet, but my hands and head also…”
Here’s the key: If you love, you will serve and you will serve what you love!
This is a problem with people today… they feel like they have to be served when the point of calvary is to serve!
Yes, He is our needs supplier BUT we serve Him and each other!
Love and humility is the key to service God!
Jesus was the example in every way!
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
Not only do I approach God humbly, but each other humbly!
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
Creates a beautiful cycle of love and humility between me and God and my brothers and sisters in Christ!
The greatest among us was servant of all!
The power of Love and Humility…
What is the very next thing that happens in the story?
One of you has lifted up his heel against me!
The one that did not pass the test…
The one that did not love…
The one that would not humble himself became the betrayer!
Jesus would also prophecy that Peter would deny him… but because of love and humility Peter would be saved!
Humility is the path back to the feet of Jesus!
The New Commandment: The Power of Love
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Jesus had already taught:
Love your neighbor as yourself
Love your enemies
Now he would teach: LOVE EACH OTHER
We say we love things… love dog, love tacos
Also say we love our families, spouses
Who do we know who we really love?
Which one do we serve?
Jesus said the world would see that we loved each other because we serve each other!
Satan is a copy cat!
He has a counterfeit for everything God does… but one!
He cannot duplicate God’s nature; LOVE!
Conclusion:
Jesus prepared his disciples for what they will face.
I am going away and leave you two keys for success
My spirit
Each other!
