Habakkuk Hangs Onto Truth
Habakkuk Hangs Onto Truth
When you don’t understand what God is doing, hold onto the truths that you do know.
Deuteronomy 29:29 ““The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
The Lord is the everlasting God.
Psalm 93:2 “Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.”
The Lord is a personal God.
Isaiah 43:15 “I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.””
The Lord had promised that this wasn’t the end of the story.
Jeremiah 4:27 “For thus says the Lord, “The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.”
- See Ephesians 2:10 and Philippians 1:6...
The Lord was his rock of refuge in the meantime.
Psalm 18:2 “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
The Lord is pure, holy, and always does what is right.
Psalm 5:4–5 “For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.”
Psalm 34:15–16 “The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.”
Habakkuk’s Complaint
Habakkuk’s Complaint
Why does the Lord allow the wicked to destroy the righteous?
Psalm 37:32–33 “The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death. The Lord will not abandon him to his power or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial.”
The problem with that question
Romans 3:10–12 “as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.””
Psalm 130:3 “If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?”
See Ezekiel 5:5-8...
Isn’t the Lord going to do something about proud, powerful, and merciless Babylon?
Last week we saw from Psalm 73 that although it seems that the wicked prosper, their prosperity is temporary. There is coming a day of judgment for the wicked.
See Jeremiah 25:8-14...
Waiting on the Lord
Waiting on the Lord
We should turn to the Lord when we have questions and confusion.
See Isaiah 40:28-31...
James 1:5–6 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”
The Lord uses His word to equip us to follow and trust Him.
Psalm 119:97–99 “Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation.”
2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
