Title: “The Armor of God: Standing Firm in the Battle of Faith”
Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 10:4 (ESV) – “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”
Introduction:
Introduction:
Brothers and sisters in Christ, we live in a world where battles are constantly raging around us—some are visible, but many are invisible. These battles aren’t just physical or emotional, they are deeply spiritual. Every day, we face attacks that are meant to shake our faith, create fear, and distract us from God.
As we dive into this last section of the last chapter of Ephesians, it brought to mind one of the most vivid dreams I had and to this day I can almost recall it perfectly.
At the time I was around 12 or 13 years old. In this dream, I found myself face to face with the devil, forced to confront him in a battle I knew I couldn’t win. The sheer terror and dread that swept over me in that moment were overwhelming. I was just a child, and the devil seemed too powerful, too cunning, and far too formidable for me to stand against. I remember feeling utterly helpless, wondering how I could possibly be expected to fight such a terrifying enemy and why he had chosen to come after me.
Just as despair began to close in on me, something remarkable happened. I was handed a Bible, and in an instant, the fear and dread that had paralyzed me vanished. In their place came an indescribable peace and a profound assurance that this was no ordinary book—it was a weapon greater than anything I could have ever imagined. The moment I grasped the Bible, the devil fled from me, and I was overwhelmed with joy. The powerful foe I had feared was gone, and in that moment, I realized the immense power of God’s Word. Hebrews 4:12 perfectly encapsulates this truth: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
This dream has stayed with me through the years, growing in significance as I’ve continued to study the Bible and observe the world around me. Although it was just a dream, it taught me three invaluable lessons.
First, the devil has no power against the sword of God’s Word. No matter how fierce or skilled he may seem, he is powerless before the truth and authority of Scripture.
Second, the devil’s strategy often involves sowing doubt about God’s Word. From the very beginning, he has tried to make us question, “Did God really say?” This subtle but insidious tactic is one of his oldest and most effective weapons.
Third, no matter how daunting our fears, how insurmountable the obstacles, or how dire the circumstances may appear, God’s Word and promises are always faithful. In the midst of life’s greatest challenges, we can find peace, strength, and assurance in the living and active Word of God.
I. The Source of Our Strength Ephesians 6:10
I. The Source of Our Strength Ephesians 6:10
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
Paul begins this passage with a call to strength, but it’s important to note where that strength comes from. He says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” Our strength doesn’t come from ourselves. We are not self-sufficient when it comes to spiritual matters. Our strength comes from God alone. It is His power that enables us to stand firm when the enemy attacks.
We are reminded in
Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
We find strength when we wait upon the Lord, trusting Him to equip us for every challenge.
Life Application:
When the pressures of life mount up—whether it’s at work, with your family, or in your personal health—do you try to handle it on your own? Or do you turn to God for strength? Too often, we burn ourselves out trying to carry the load by ourselves. But God calls us to lean on Him. He invites us to draw strength from His might so that we can stand firm in the face of adversity.
Explanation: Our strength comes not from our own abilities, but from God. Paul begins by reminding us that we cannot fight spiritual battles in our own power; we need God's strength.
II. Understanding the Battle Ephesians 6:11-12
II. Understanding the Battle Ephesians 6:11-12
A great quote I saw the other day, it said this “Make no mistake. This is spiritual warfare. All of it”
This is exactly Paul’s sentiments: Ephesians 6:11-12
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
As we really think about this, the more it should become obvious. The enemy we face is not one that we can see with our eyes. This is not a battle against other people—our co-workers, our neighbors, the government, or even those who may oppose us. Our true enemy is the devil and the spiritual forces of evil that work behind the scenes. Satan’s attacks come in all kinds of forms, temptations, doubts, fears, deception and lies, all designed to weaken our faith.
Biblical Reference:
1 Peter 5:8 (ESV) warns us,
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Satan is always on the prowl, looking for ways to devour and destroy. We must remain vigilant.
Illustration:
Imagine playing chess against an opponent who knows every move you're about to make. They anticipate your strategy and know your weaknesses. This is what Satan does to us spiritually. He is crafty and seeks to outmaneuver us. But God, in His goodness, has provided us with spiritual defenses.
Life Application:
When we experience conflict—whether in our marriages, friendships, or workplaces—it’s easy to see the other person as the enemy. But Paul reminds us that people are not the enemy. Our real battle is against the devil’s schemes. Next time you face relational tension or frustration, pause and remember who the real enemy is: Satan, the one who seeks to divide and destroy.
Paul clarifies that our struggle is not merely physical but spiritual. The enemy is subtle, and his schemes are aimed at undermining our faith, hope, and love.
III. The Full Armor of God Ephesians 6:13-17
III. The Full Armor of God Ephesians 6:13-17
Paul then gives us a detailed description of the armor God provides for us, piece by piece, so that we can stand firm against the enemy. Let’s walk through this armor and see how each part equips us for spiritual battle.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
A. The Belt of Truth
A. The Belt of Truth
Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
Paul says, “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…”
The belt of truth holds everything together. Just as a belt secures a soldier’s armor, truth secures us in God’s Word. In a world filled with lies and deceit, we must stand on the truth of the gospel.
Biblical Reference:
John 8:32 (ESV) – “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Truth sets us free from deception and empowers us to live righteously.
B. The Breastplate of Righteousness
B. The Breastplate of Righteousness
Paul says, “…and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.”
The breastplate protects the heart. In the same way, righteousness—right living according to God’s standards—guards our hearts against sin and guilt.
Illustration:
Think of a bulletproof vest. It’s designed to shield vital organs from harm. Righteousness protects our spiritual heart from the attacks of sin and guilt that would otherwise destroy us.
and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
C. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
C. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Paul says, “…and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”
Shoes provide stability and readiness. The gospel gives us peace and the ability to stand firm, even when circumstances are difficult.
Biblical Reference:
Romans 5:1 (ESV) – “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Peace in Christ enables us to stand, no matter what challenges arise.
D. The Shield of Faith
D. The Shield of Faith
In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;
Paul says, “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.”
Faith is our defense against the doubts, fears, and temptations the enemy throws at us. With the shield of faith, we trust God’s promises, even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
E. The Helmet of Salvation
E. The Helmet of Salvation
and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
Paul says, “And take the helmet of salvation…”
The helmet protects the head, symbolizing how salvation guards our minds. It reminds us that we are children of God, saved by grace, and gives us confidence to face the enemy.
Biblical Reference:
Romans 12:2 (ESV) – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” Our salvation transforms our thinking and protects us from the world’s lies.
F. The Sword of the Spirit (Word of God)
F. The Sword of the Spirit (Word of God)
Paul says, “…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
The sword is the only offensive weapon in the armor. It represents the power of God’s Word to cut through the lies of the enemy. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He used Scripture to combat every temptation.
Biblical Reference:
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) – “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword…” God’s Word is powerful and effective in spiritual warfare.
praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,
for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
V. Encouragement in the Battle Ephesians 6:21-24
V. Encouragement in the Battle Ephesians 6:21-24
Explanation:
Paul concludes by reminding us of the importance of prayer. “Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” Prayer is the key to staying connected with God in battle. It strengthens us, equips us, and helps us remain focused on Him.
Illustration:
Prayer is like a soldier staying in constant communication with their commanding officer. Without guidance from the commander, they would be lost in battle. Prayer keeps us connected to God’s guidance and strength.
Life Application:
How often do we go into the day without praying? When we neglect prayer, we cut ourselves off from the source of our strength. We must be people of prayer, constantly asking God for His help in the battle.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
As we face spiritual battles in this world, God has given us the tools we need to stand firm. The armor of God is available to all of us, but we must put it on daily. Let us remember that we do not fight these battles alone. We have the strength of God, the truth of His Word, and the power of prayer on our side. We are in a spiritual battle, and it has nothing to do with the flesh and blood but everything to do with the evil one who seeks to destroy us, and lead us away from the truth, God however gives us the armor we need to to stand firm against his schemes.
Closing:
A soldier wouldn’t dare step onto the battlefield without their armor. Every day we step into a spiritual battlefield. Let us not go unprotected. Put on the full armor of God and stand firm in the strength He provides for us in Jesus Christ, in his truth, in his word and in these sacraments. Strengthening until that day when he will win the battle, and every knee will bow. Amen
