There are many things happening in our world today that can cause us to fear. However, as Christians, we should allow fear to overtake us. Why? Because the Bible says that fear is not of God. Whatever is not of God is from either the world, the flesh, or the devil. If faith is like a fire in our souls, then fear is a fire extinguisher. Fear will torment us and drag us down spiritually. But we can overcome fear through our faith in God who gives us power, love, and a sound mind. Let God set your faith on fire. And then cast your fear into the fire! Today we’re learning how to have Faith Without Fear.

SCRIPTURE

2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

MESSAGE

Two Types of Fear in the Bible
awe or reverence (fear of the Lord).
to be afraid | terrified | timid | cowardly (this is the type we are dealing with today).
The Greek word in this verse is deilia (di-lee-ah) = timid, fearful, cowardly.
The most common word for fear in the NT is phobeo (Greek) = phobia (English) = to be afraid.
Fear is on the Rise
There are many things going on in the world today that cause us to fear.
The Bible says that in the last days, “men’s hearts would fail them for fear.”
And as I studied this topic of fear I came across some phobias that are legitimate psychological conditions that demonstrate just how much fear has taken over in our society:
Arachi|butyro|phobia = the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth.
Helio|phobia = the fear of the sun.
Chrono|mentro|phobia = the fear of clocks.
Ergo|phobia = the fear of work.
Decido|phobia = the fear of making decisions.
Nomo|phobia = the fear of being without your phone.
Phobo|phobia = the fear of phobias.
Genu|phobia = the fear of knees.
Pogono|phobia = the fear of beards.
Hippo|poto|monstros|esquipe|dalio|phobia = the fear of long words.
These may sound crazy to us, but there are real legitimate fears that people deal with and even we as Christians deal with.
The uncertainty of the future.
The increasing cost of living.
The possibility of an economic crash.
The possibility of world war.
The increase of violence.
The increase of persecution.
The level of division in our country.
Fear is not from God
God has not given us a spirit of fear.
If fear is not from God, then it is from either the world, the flesh, or the devil.
Fear is the opposite of Faith.
If Faith is a fire in our soul, then fear is a fire extinguisher.
That is why the Bible tells us over and over again “Fear not” | “Do not be afraid.”
Some say that the Bible has at least 365 verses that tell us not to fear (one for every day of the year).
Fear is a Spirit
But Fear is not from the Holy Spirit.
Fear is an evil spirit.
How do you get rid of an evil spirit? You cast it out.
How do you cast out the spirit of fear? Through what God has given to us:
Power
We can cast out the spirit of fear through the power of the Holy Ghost and Fire!
That’s why we encourage you to seek for the baptism in the Holy Ghost.
Fan the flames of your faith!
2 Timothy 1:6 NKJV
6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Love
Perfect Love casts out fear!
1 John 4:18 NKJV
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
Fear brings torment.
There is no torment in the perfect love of God.
Sound Mind
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
A renewed mind is a sound mind.
Romans 12:1–2 NKJV
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
If you mind is filled with fear, it needs to be renewed by the power of Christ.
Fear is a Liar
Fear says “I will destroy you” | Faith says “God is on my side”
Who do we have to fear?
Psalm 27:1 NKJV
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
If God be for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31 NKJV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
What can man do to me?
Psalm 118:6 NKJV
6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
Fear says “you’ll never be good enough” | Faith says “I belong to the Lord and that’s enough”
Isaiah 43:1 NKJV
1 But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.
Fear says “I’ve got you in my grip” | Faith says “I will trust in the Lord”
Psalm 56:3 NKJV
3 Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.
Fear says “I’ll make you suffer” | Faith says “I am still blessed”
1 Peter 3:14 NKJV
14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.”
Fear says “I’ll take you out” | Faith says “God will deliver me, but if not, I still won’t bow down to fear.”
Matthew 10:28 NKJV
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
