Abrahamic Promise: Fulfillment of land promise (Lesson 31 and quiz review) 10/29/24
Introduction:
The promise that God made to Abraham regarding the land (Gen12:1-3) was going to be realized, fulfilled in time of Joshua
The iniquity of the inhabitants of the land has filled up and Isreal will now posses the land.
Aim:
To show from the scripture that the promise was fully fulfilled, that Israel took possession of all of the land that was promised to Abraham’s seed.
To realize the truth that it happened under leadership of Joshua and any other theory that denies that the Jews never possessed the land is erroneous (i.e. Premillenilism)
Outline:
Israel received all the land which God promised (Jos21:43-45)
Joshua 21:43–45 NASB95
43 So the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it. 44 And the Lord gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hand. 45 Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.
Notice, gave “all”
Notice, they possessed “all”
Notice, and “all” came to pass
Note: This fulfillment is based on the promise made to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
Not one thing has failed (Jos23:14-16)
Joshua 23:14–16 NASB95
14 “Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which the Lord your God spoke concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them has failed. 15 “It shall come about that just as all the good words which the Lord your God spoke to you have come upon you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the threats, until He has destroyed you from off this good land which the Lord your God has given you. 16 “When you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you will perish quickly from off the good land which He has given you.”
He reminds them Jehovah can be trusted
He warned them about covenant breaking would bring about a course, reiterating the law of Moses (Deut28:1-30:10).
Israel reigned over all the land which God promised (1Kn4:21)
Solomon ruled over “all” the land
In his reign you can see the blessings upon Israel at the time and them possessing the land.
Israel’s reception and possession of the land confirmed by Nehemiah the prophet (Neh9:7-8)
In Chapter 9 of Nehemiah he reminds the people of the Abrahamic covenant.
After reminding them of the covenant he reminds them of the fulfillment of it (v.8).
Conclusion
We have looked at the unfolding of God’s Abrahamic promise and the fulfillment of it. The land portion of the promise is what we have been looking at.
The promised seed became a mighty people
The promised seed received the promised land and took possession of “all of it.”
So what is left of the Abrahamic promise, the Spiritual Seed aspect, for the physical part has been fulfilled and not left to some unknown date in the future.
REVIEW FOR QUIZ ON ABRAHAMIC PROMISE (Lessons 28-31)
What is a covenant?
Defined as “a coming together of two or more parties who come together to make a contract, agreeing on promises, stipulations, privileges, and responsibilities.
Where can you find the covenant of circumcision?
Gen17:1-14 also Rom4:16-17
What was the purpose of the covenant of circumcision?
They were to keep the command, they and all their descendants (Abraham’s seed)
By circumcision the people are acknowledging the God of Abraham.
The circumcision was a condition for them to receive the land
What does the term everlasting mean?
In Hebrew it means “age lasting.”
According to the New Testament the covenant of circumcision ran it’s course. Some scriptures to prove it are?
Rom2:28-29, Php3:3, Col2:11-12, Gal5:1-6, Rom4:1ff, Gal5:1-12, and Act15.
Be sure to review the scriptures to use them in an essay question. Be ready to define the terms used.
Abrahamic Promise: The land promise Fulfilled
Covenant was made with Abraham, renewed with Isaac (Gen26:1-5; Rom9:7-13)
The promise was restated to Jacob (Gen28:3-4, 13-14) and see in the sons of Jacob (Gen30)
You can see God’s hand in moving the people to the land due to famine (Gen39-50; Exo1:1-7, 20) It is here that the seed portion multiplies
Abraham was told it would happen in the forth generation and Moses and Aaron were the forth generation (Exo6:7, 16-20, Deut29:12-13)
This is only a partial fulfilling of the land promise, the full fulfillment was yet to come under Joshua.
Be ready to write about how God’s hand worked this out over the 400 year period, using scripture.
Abrahamic Promise: Covenant of blessing and cursing
You can find this covenant in (Deut28:1-30:20)
The blessings (Deut28:1-14)
The Cursing (Deut28:16-68)
Be sure to look to see if there were any conditions in this covenant and know what verses.
The other aspect was the land return, the remnant return (Deut30:1-10)
Important to note this is only a remnant.
There were conditions to retain the land, and the condition was obedience.
The other condition was faith and love (Deut30:11-20)
Moses God’s prophet foretold of the land possession, and also the disobedience that brought on the curse, that started with the Solomon’s disobedience.
Abrahamic Promise: Fulfillment of land promise (all of it)
I know we did this just today, but a few quick notes to prepare you for the quiz.
Be attentive to (Jos21:43-45), give notice to the words used showing the fulfillment
There were several proofs they had “all” the land
Jos23:14-16, 1Kng4:21; and Neh9:7-8)
Be ready to show how we can know that Israel received “all” the land fulfilling the land portion of the Abrahamic Covenant.
