Say: Let us now begin to worship the Father the Son, the Holy Spirit, Our Call to worship Comes to us from Reading

Psalm 92:1–2 ESV
1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; 2 to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night,

Introduction

Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations 2006 The Key Called Promise

In Bunyan’s great allegory, Pilgrim’s Progress, the incident is related of how Christian decides to leave the Main Highway and follow another Path which seemed easier. But this Path leads him into the territory of Giant Despair who owns Doubting Castle.

Eventually he is captured by Giant Despair and kept in a dungeon. He is advised to kill himself. The Giant said there was no use trying to keep on with his journey. For the time, it seemed as if Despair had really conquered Christian. But then, Hope, Christian’s companion, reminds him of previous victories. So it came about that on Saturday about midnight they began to pray, and continued in prayer until almost morning.

Now a little before it was day, good Christian, as one half-amazed, broke out in passionate speech, “What a fool am I thus to lie in a stinking Dungeon, when I may as well be at liberty. I have a Key in my bosom called Promise that will, I am persuaded, open any lock in Doubting Castle.” Then said Hopeful, “That’s good news. Good Brother, pluck it out of thy bosom and try.” And the prison gates flew open

Text

Mark 12:35–40 ESV
35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ 37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly. 38 And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

Observations/Background

We need to place this text in it’s context to really understand the story going on.
The gospel of Mark is about the King coming to save his people. The gospel has come, the promise
This text is Jesus beginning to teach about what God’s word has said. He has been contending with the Pharisees, Sadducee and the scribes this whole time and now he is teaching the word. Imagine this sermon. The text says in Mark 12:37
Mark 12:37 And the great throng heard him gladly.
He is going through the text mapping out the places that he is mentioned and shows his connection to David the King. Jesus is the son of David. This is a really unquie section in Mark, because he doesn’t quote the OT often, but even the gentiles need to know he is the promised king!
So when we see this text. Glorify in the king of kings, treasure this truth that the king has come. The kinglyness of JEsus is so good

Application note:

Point 1 The Entirety of the Law and Prophets is about Jesus

(READ THE WHOLE PASSAGE AGAIN)
The Lord is quoting here PS. 110:1
Psalm 110:1 ESV
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Turn with me to this Psalm quickly
Psalm 110 ESV
A Psalm of David. 1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! 3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. 4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. 7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.
Do you see the awesome predictions of Jesus here.
David, the most famous King of the OT says His Lord will Put his enemies under his footstool
Verse 2 is quoting God’s promises to Abraham Gen. 35:11
Genesis 35:11 ESV
11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.
The king of kings has come in Jesus! The company of nations is us!
Stopping for a momment. All of the Old testament is a story about Jesus! The Prophets, wisdom literature, the Torah, all of it is for us! J.C Ryle, Who Spurgeon called the best of men in the church of England said this:
Let us learn, in the first place, from these verses, how much there is about Christ in the Old Testament Scriptures. Our Lord desires to expose the ignorance of the Jewish teachers about the true nature of the Messiah. He does it by referring to a passage in the book of Psalms, and showing that the Scribes did not rightly understand it. And in so doing He shows us that one subject, about which David was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write, was Christ.
We know, from our Lord's own words in another place, that the Old Testament Scriptures "testify of Christ." (John 5:39.) They were intended to teach men about Christ, by types, and figures, and prophecy, until He Himself should appear on earth. We should always keep this in mind, in reading the Old Testament, but never so much as in reading the Psalms. Christ is undoubtedly to be found in every part of the Law and the Prophets, but nowhere is He so much to be found, as in the book of Psalms. His experience and sufferings at His first coming into the world--His future glory, and His final triumph at His second coming--are the chief subjects of many a passage in that wonderful part of God's word. It is a true saying, that we should look for Christ quite as much as David, in reading the Psalms.
Let us beware of undervaluing, or despising the Old Testament. In its place and proportion, the Old Testament is just as valuable as the New. There are probably many rich passages in that part of the Bible which have never yet been fully explored. There are deep things about Jesus in it, which many walk over like hidden gold mines, and know not the treasures beneath their feet. Let us reverence all the Bible. All is given by inspiration, and all is profitable. One part throws light upon another, and no part can ever be neglected without loss and damage to our souls. A boastful contempt for the Old Testament Scriptures has often proved the first step towards infidelity.

Application:

So Never allow yourself to doubt or thing of any part of scripture as lessor! I was told in this church by a guest, that they had never heard the 10 commandments preach through before! I was shocked! This book is ours! It all speaks of Jesus, every line. devour this book, read and re-read it. Listen to it, let it grow into your soul!
I was told that in the ancient and medieval era that men would, read and sing th scriptures so often that they would after a run sweat it out. It was so throughly brought into the english language that the phrase good by is just the shorten version of the original farewell “God be with you!” (Spanish has the to with adios!)
Pick a book of the bible, read it again and again. Try this week to read Mark cover to cover, or listen to it on some device 2 times. Anything that strikes you write it down. Read it with your family, read it alone. listen to it on your phone while driving, working out, doing chores. If you have weak eys or are not a fast or good reader, look into getting an audio version. Maybe we can buy an audio version for the church and figure out a way for you to listen to it.
You will be changed if you put the word in you again and again!
This week I noticed the Exodus story in Genesis with Abrham and Sarah! That story happens again and again in the text. The book of Matthew is really Jesus acting our the history of the nation of Israel! Beacause he is the Israel of God!
We could go on and on! Read your word You will find treasure hidden by the king of kings! value worrth more then all the Gold! Dig into the word! Prov. 25:2
Proverbs 25:2 ESV
2 It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.
God glories in hiding things and it’s glorious to find in out! I love it when I can see something click with my children! Sarah this week fell in love with this song about the Roman empire! she has dates of the Imperial period begining, 27 BC, (Expand as you see fit)
The glory of her getting the song, brings me glory! Imagine the glory you recive when you find the gold your heavenly father has hidden! Love the word!

Point 2 He is the Greater David

Look at the direct contrast between the responce to Jesus and the scribe/pharisees/Sadducee
The people had Joy because of Jesus Mark 12:37
Mark 12:37 ESV
37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
but they lead people to death and devouring Mark 12:40
Mark 12:40 ESV
40 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
There was belief that the hands of the king are healing in the medieval era. Why because the king of kings touch would heal! You can see how the true king and the false king work opposed to one another!

Application: What are your false kings?

Often we have things that like the pharisees are consuming us that we experince, that re expecting the best spots in our lives like the pharisees, that are drowning us and consuming us up. Your sin if you love your sin is doing that to you. Are you drowing in lying, lust, Spurgeon would add rightly Sabbath breaking. Are you being comsumed? Are you experincing that oppression?
This is what Jesus will do for you:
Use Psalm 110:2
Psalm 110:2 ESV
2 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Psalm 110:5–6 ESV
5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.
I also want to point out that this shattering has happened and will happen again and again. God will deliver people over and over again.

Point 3 The King will destroy evil

Look at Verse Mark 12:36
Mark 12:36 ESV
36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’
A Kings job is to destroy evil, to protect his people from evil. To deliver them from the things that wish them dead!
You can see that the people hear this and they are glad! Let me show you why. I’m sure you’re glad to hear that evil will be defeated, but you’re not glad enough. let’s travel through our Bibles a bit.
Now Look at Psalm 110:6 This is from the NKJV
Psalm 110:6 NKJV
6 He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall execute the heads of many countries.
That’s David speaking of the coming Lord. David is quoting Moses in this moment. Check this out...
Now look real quick at Gen. 3 :15
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Do you see it? Folow me deeper into your Bible
Numbers 24:17 ESV
17 I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth.
David knew his Bible, he knew it from when he was a wee little lad. He then writes a song in which he repeats Moses about the future coming Messiah-king.
David Agrees with Moses.
Habakkuk 3:13 ESV
13 You went out for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the house of the wicked, laying him bare from thigh to neck. Selah
That’s the Minor prophets!
We could go on and one throughout the text.
Explain David and Goliath, Giant - half demon half man- had scaled armor, like the snake does, David’s stone sunk into the head of golaith, then he cut it offf with a sword.

4 And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named bGoliath, from cGath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was 1armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze

The coat of mail in the hebrew is Scale armor.
1 Samuel 17:48–54 NKJV
48 So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52 Now the men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as the entrance of the valley and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell along the road to Shaaraim, even as far as Gath and Ekron. 53 Then the children of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their tents. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

Application:

Satan and death will be defeated, sin will be undone, because the king is coming and his kingdom is already taking root among us.
Revelation 20:10 ESV
10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
They old serpent, that dragon will be thrown into the lake of fire forever. He has already lost almost all his power because of the ressurection, his last little bit will be defeated aswell.
You maybe experinceing evil that you can’t explain or have, it will end. All enemies will be put under his footstool.
Death and dying will be defeated for good
Isaiah 25:8 ESV
8 He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.
Does that sound fimaler?
Revelation 21:4 ESV
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Yes the conquering king will destroy these things. Yes he will.
So take comfort, this is temporary. Your full true life is to come! In the eyes of your heart, let Jesus wipe away your tears. The king himself will do it. Jesus knows heartache and loss. He wept for loss, he will wipe away every tear, personally.
That section of Revelation is so beautiful to the soul
Revelation 21:5–7 ESV
5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
this is God speaking, to us, his church, his children. He says what Christ said on the cross, IT is done! What a blessed phrase from our God! Evil, sin, death, currption, Desiease, cancer, evil men, satan, they are done! If you thirsty while in these things he will provide you aid, and relief now and forever! The one who conquers, the NKJV uses overcomes, God is speaking to us! We are the conqueres, the overcomers, yes this life is hard but this is our reward for the hardship. He will make you a son and daugther of him! When one of my children gets hurt we run to pick them up to comfort them our father does the same! Our God and our heavenly father! What a beauty divine! Maybe you miss your earthly father, not only will we see them, but also that heavenly father also!
If you’re struggling today your heavenly father has you now!
Earthly men take note here, be this kind of man! fight the enemies, comfort your families! Women help those love this way, love this way yourself! Your comfort reflects our God’s comfort!
Jesus is and will finally crush death and what’s left satan’s power! Rejoice!

Point 4

Mark 12:37 ESV
37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
DO you receive this promised king gladly? (Gospel and repentance call)

Say: As we close our service of worship dear brother and sister please stand for our benediction and receive by faith this blessing from God

Psalm 91:1–4 ESV
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
