Building a heart of a servant
Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. - Dr. Martin Luther King
Do you want to be great?
Mark 10:43–45 NIV
43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus modeled servanthood to us of the washing of the disciples feet.
John 13:12–17 NIV
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
Ephesians 2:10 NIV
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
There is a work God has prepared for you. What is it? I don’t know.
1 Corinthians 12:4–5 NIV
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” – John Wesley
Serving others is serving God.
Matthew 25:40 NIV
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
We should not grow weary in doing good, as our efforts in volunteering are valuable and impactful.
Galatians 6:9 NIV
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 5:13 NIV
13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
Kidz min. We don’t want you to serve and help watch our children. We want you to have a desire to humbly love them and serve them.
Matthew 5:16 NIV
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Let them see it for His fame not yours.
Colossians 3:17 NIV
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Do it in his name and not for your name. Don’t be a credit hog.
I've got to stop coming and asking what I can get from God and start saying what can I give to God he said. So years ago I stopped coming to church for myself he said. I realized worship was for God it wasn't even for me. I realized that serving was for other people it wasn't even for me.
“Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country” - John F. Kennedy
God is looking for some with a heart to say I’ll do it.
Isaiah 6:8 NIV
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
Last week I encouraged you to carry each others burdens. But you said if we don’t know what they are how can we help carry them?
You what I am guilty of as your pastor? I don’t share the burdens or the needs of the church and the work that needs to be accomplished enough and I am guilty of saying I will do it I will start it.
Every week I hear from one of you that Pastor we should start (fill in the blank) or we need to have (fill in the blank)
