LESSON: HIS NAME, BLOOD, & WORD
REVIEW
Lamentations 3:55–57 NLT
55 But I called on your name, Lord, from deep within the pit. 56 You heard me when I cried, “Listen to my pleading! Hear my cry for help!” 57 Yes, you came when I called; you told me, “Do not fear.”
5 THINGS THAT HAPPEN WHEN YOU CALL ON THE NAME
ABOVE ALL...
Philippians 2:9–11 NLT
9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
God's name speaks of His great power and majesty, His perfect character and utter holiness.
His is the name which is above every name
Philippians 2:9 NLT
9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,
HIS NAME & WORD OR AUTHORITY & CHARACTER
I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. (Psalm 138:2 NIV)
I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. (Psalm 138:2 HCSB)
I will bow toward your holy temple. I will give thanks to your name because of your mercy and truth. You have made your name and your promise greater than everything. (Psalm 138:2 God’s Word)
JESUS IS ABOVE ALL
The idea here is that God’s character and promise, or His Word, is greater than everything. This seems to be a much better way of understanding the text.
Some Emend the Text The New English Translation understands this verse differently. It says, I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your name, because of your loyal love and faithfulness, for you have exalted your promise above the entire sky. (Psalm 138:2 NET)
Psalm 138:2 NET
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your name, because of your loyal love and faithfulness, for you have exalted your promise above the entire sky.
This translation of the NET Bible emends or changes the text. Instead of reading “your name” it emends to the text to read “your heavens.” This would make the verse say that God’s faithfulness to His promises is clear for all to see.
According to Hebrew custom, the “name” of someone referred to his authority and reputation. Thus, the name of God refers to His authority and reputation, just as the name of Jesus refers to his authority and reputation.
That is why today we pray in the “name” of Jesus Christ, i.e.,
we pray according to his authority (John 15:16);
John 15:16 NLT
16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
we command healing in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 3:6);
Acts 3:6 NLT
6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!”
why demons must come out when we use the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 16:18);
ACTS 16.18
Acts 16:18 NLT
18 This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her.
AND...
why baptism was done in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 10:48).
Acts 10:48 NLT
48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.
God’s “name” was His authority and reputation, so a cultural understanding of this translation is that God exalted His Word above all other things that are under His authority, even His authority itself.

Acts 17:24–26 NLT
24 “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, 25 and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. 26 From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.
How then do we apply the precious blood of Jesus?
Well, it's just like a lot of other things in the bible; we have to apply it by faith. Faith comes by hearing and, hearing the through the word of Christ (Romans 10:17 ).
Romans 10:17 NLT
17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.
