Jeremiah 10:6–7 ESV
6 There is none like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is great in might. 7 Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you.
Introduction:
I have to make something right that I said last week, I was wrong.
I stated that Moses hadn’t followed protocol by telling the heads of the Hebrews together before going into Pharaoh.
He did tell them first and he brought them into the court of Pharaoh.
Exodus 4:29–31 “29 Then Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the people of Israel. 30 Aaron spoke all the words that the Lord had spoken to Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31 And the people believed; and when they heard that the Lord had visited the people of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped.”
The people believed what Moses was supposed to do; but it was short lived.
It sounded like they stopped believing when the foreman were beaten for not meeting the quota.
Growing up I was usually the smallest and youngest when playing sports at the park or in our neighborhood.
Whether it was baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, it didn’t matter I just played whatever everyone else played.
This is what I learned about playing against older, faster, stronger, taller people.
You have to try way harder just to loose.
But after a childhood of playing with people much older, stronger, taller, faster, you realize when you play people your own age you’re a little bit better.
My main sport was soccer; but I wrestled, and played every other sport except tennis.
When I went to college there was a kid on another soccer team who had maybe played in High School.
I’ve played since I was 4 and had been in travel leagues that played all over Michigan and into different states, even Canada, I was used to playing high caliber opponents.
This guy was a defender who started right off the bat playing very physical; which turned into uncontrolled slide tackles (very dangerous)
I warned him to stop playing like that and just play the ball.
He continued with a few more dangerous moves.
I warned him once more, and this time I made sure he understood what I meant.
The ball came to our side and I had that window of opportunity to teach him about soccer.
He picked himself up, and I wasn’t sure what he was going to do, I was ready.
This was a christian college mind you!
He called to the bench and sat the rest of the game.
We had a bridge that crossed over the street from the soccer fields to the school and it was caged in.
All of the sudden a guy came running from behind me yelling to me “Hey”, “You come here”.
I thought crap, i’m getting in trouble for sure.
He shook my hand and apologized to me and said:
“I’m sorry for the way I was playing I just get a little too into the game.”
Then he thanked me.
So I asked him why did you thank me?
He said: “you warned me a lot and I you weren’t kidding you rung my bell and you could’ve done much worse.”
We were friends after that.
I tell this story not to glory in my past; but in an feeble attempt to illustrate from a human perspective.
God’s authority and power against the unskilled and unable.
That other player could do nothing to stop a somewhat simple move of mine.
God in this chapter reveals that He is about to enact His authority over those who can do nothing to go against Him.
Moses finished chapter 5 by complaining to God about the message not being accepted and more labor is put on the Hebrews and Moses is getting blamed.
Exodus 6:1 ESV
1 But the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”
God says to Moses, I am going to exact so much authority onto Pharaoh that he will drive you out of Egypt and make you leave!
Transition:
God is telling Moses to watch and witness:

Who He Is (1-5)

God reminds Moses that there is only one God and He is Him!
He makes the proclamation:
Exodus 6:2 ESV
2 God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord.
I Am The Lord (2)
Imagine this:
Something you created begins thinking it has authority over you.
Illustration:
Many parents have had that moment when their children misunderstood the hierarchy of the home.
They became delusional and thought they were in charge!
You might only make that mistake once!
I remember a moment in my childhood when I thought it would be funny to tell my dad: come make me at a family gathering.
The only thing funny at that point was my ride on the 1 arm merry go round.
Just imagine how silly it would’ve been for Pharaoh to begin this delusion to think that God has no authority over him or Egypt.
God said to Moses: I am the Lord!
Moses at the end of chapter 5 complained to the Lord about the power Pharaoh commanded over the Hebrews and He should’ve sent someone else.
God says:
Exodus 6:1–2 ESV
1 But the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.” 2 God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord.
Connection:
We act the same way as Pharaoh does sometimes.
We believe we are the ultimate authority of our lives.
? If this is the case answer this question and really think about it:
How much do you actually control in your life?
I have personally found: not much!
James 4:13–14 ESV
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
We make plans; but the only control we have is how we respond to scenarios around us and to plan the best we can for today and tomorrow.
We are like Pharaoh in believing that we control the majority of things around us; when in reality God does and sometimes He will have to remind us of that!
It would be better if we maintain a healthy fear of our Sovereign Lord.
Here in Egypt God is about to be on display for the whole world!
He makes sure that Moses and the Hebrews realize He is the same God their ancestors followed out of Ur, and had given them promises.
Exodus 6:3–4 ESV
3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners.
The same God who called out Abram from the pagan rituals, culture, and lifestyle into a relationship with Him.
That God is going to reveal Himself to the whole family and world.
Let’s relate this to us:
At the moment of salvation God revealed Himself to us.
The same God who directed men to write and record this book.
The God of the bible.
The God of all creation.
He revealed Himself in a powerful way to us: Delivered us from our Sin. Redeemer of our soul.
He is worthy of our trust and can handle the faith we place on Him to be God for us!
Moses was distraught from the extra hardship the Hebrews now had; yet God comforted him in what He was telling him.
Much the same as when we search the scriptures for the truth we desire and find it!
God reminds Moses:
I Keep my Promises (5)
Exodus 6:5 ESV
5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant.
I know my children’s situations
I hear their cries.
This is why I sent you!
To be my spokesperson and deliver from slavery!
Transition:
In the N.T. the spokesperson was John the Baptist.
Remember his message:
Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
One will come who takes away the sins of the world, who’s shoe latches I’m not worthy to touch.
Behold the lamb of God.
John 1:29 ESV
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus made Himself known to the world and to you.
My God isn’t one who cannot be known like other beliefs.
Muhammad, Gandhi, Any name that is considered a deity or has followers, they are all still dead.
Jesus is not!
He laid down His life and He took it up again.
Matthew 27:50 ESV
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
Matthew 17:23 ESV
23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
This was why Pilate commanded a seal and guard to be by the tomb!
Matthew 27:63–64 ESV
63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.”
Jesus is not dead, He revealed Himself as All Powerful God in flesh.
He sacrificed Himself for us and is now in His position of authority; but will return for His bride, the church.
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
He died, rose again, ascended into Heaven and sits in Authority, and it’s so cool that we can have a relationship with Him and know Him.
Jesus revealed Himself to us in those moments we came face to face with our sin nature.
Gain confidence and comfort in believing that truth!
Moses was comforted by God telling Him Who He is!
He should be excited about:

What He will Do (6-9)

First:
He will deliver and redeem (6)
Exodus 6:6 ESV
6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.
Notice 2 actions He chooses to do on behalf of answering the Hebrews prayers.
Deliver
Redeem
His wording is that of a physical re-location for the Hebrews.
His plan was that they wouldn’t be in Egypt, they would be outside of the reach of any worldly authority!
He wanted them to be under His authority and leadership.
He would deliver them from their slavery.
Fulfilling and doing something about their cries to Him!
Know that when you call out to the Lord He hears you every time and understands what is going on in your life.
His desires a relationship with us.
The same that He desired for the Hebrews:
To be their God and ours. (7-8)
Exodus 6:7–8 ESV
7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’ ”
After He brings them out from the Egyptians, no one could deny that God was on their side and fights for them.
He isn’t just an idol, or false god.
This is thee one and only God with power and authority.
Connection:
What miracles in your life has God performed and removed any way of denying His presence among you?
When we don’t have any that we can state with specificity, we aren’t paying attention to Him in our lives.
Some things could be simple:
You heard the gospel and accepted it!
He met you in your sin and extended grace and mercy.
Why would He extend that to me?
I don’t deserve that. Justice says that I should be punished!
Yet Here I am a redeemed soul because of Him!
I cannot deny He is Lord and that I know Him.
He is my God, and Lord of my life!
I hope we notice from these verses God leaves something to pay attention to, just like we should as we read the Bible.
Eighteen times from verses 1-8 God states something about Himself!
If you don’t know the Lord whom you serve and believe in:
Read the 18 statements about Himself in them He is revealing Himself to you!
Which in turn helps us know what He would expect of us!
No different than you knowing your parents and understanding what they would expect in your character, conduct, and integrity!
Why do we know that? Because we know them!
In all of this:
They didn’t believe Him (9)
Exodus 6:9 ESV
9 Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.
It seems they were in a place of deep despair.
It had gotten to a point in their spirit that they lost hope or wouldn’t believe anything other that what they knew:
Being slaves.
Connection:
If we have ever been this low or weak in our faith:
God knows!
He understands!
The coolest part: He can rebuild your spiritual strength.
Maybe He brought you here today to begin that rebuilding process.
To reveal to you you’re not alone in this struggle and His church can love you through it all.
With Moses and the Hebrews:
The Lord made His demand (10-13)
Exodus 6:10–13 ESV
10 So the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the people of Israel go out of his land.” 12 But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, the people of Israel have not listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, for I am of uncircumcised lips?” 13 But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them a charge about the people of Israel and about Pharaoh king of Egypt: to bring the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
God instructs Moses to Demand that Pharaoh release them.
Moses’ radar was probably going crazy because of this statement:
The last time he requested for the release of the Hebrews their foreman were beat and their labor became a lot harder and impossible.
What could he expect by going in guns a blazing and telling the Pharaoh what to do?
He might be killed for speaking to him that way!
This would test another area of Moses faith:
Will you believe and obey even if your’e life hangs in the balance?
Connection:
I don’t believe that our lives hang in the balance of obeying the Lord; but there are times when it seems pretty bad.
There are even times when standing firm in our faith severs relationships with those who we thought believed the same things we do.
God back to 2019 and see which people lost friends and to see whether or not they have reconciled.
Look through the political landscape and see who avoids the conversations because they know it will sever those relationships.
Will you still have those important conversations?
At risk of that friendship?
Once again back to those who are “real friends”.
Salvation calls us to represent the Lord in every moment and to love those around us.
If we want truth from a friend and love when we disagree:
Why would I give them less then I hope for from them?
Moses and Aaron are to go before Pharaoh and demand it and know with confidence that They’re leaving!
Transition:
We have who God is, and What He will do, now we get into the area where most people skip over: Genealogy. (I also am included by that statement.)
God reminds us, just in case we could have problems knowing what families Moses and Aaron came from, that Moses and Aaron have a lineage!
God tells us:

Who He will do it for (14-25)

14-25 provides us with the heritage for Moses and Aaron beginning with Abraham.
Reuben
Simeon
Those who are of the tribe of Levi.
The tribe of Levi being those who are the priests of Israel.
Here in Verse :20 we have recorded Moses’ and Aarons parents.
Exodus 6:20 ESV
20 Amram took as his wife Jochebed his father’s sister, and she bore him Aaron and Moses, the years of the life of Amram being 137 years.
This lineage would answer the question of the one whining in the desert: who made you leader over us?
It is written down:
For the record (26-27)
Exodus 6:26–27 ESV
26 These are the Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said: “Bring out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt by their hosts.” 27 It was they who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing out the people of Israel from Egypt, this Moses and this Aaron.
God called Moses and Aaron to represent Him to a Pharaoh.
He recorded it for us!
This is actually a principal we find taught in the N.T.
A principal which is supposed to encourage and embolden our conversations in the Lord.
Matthew 10:18–19 ESV
18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.
These passages are referring to the persecutions they would endure after He was killed; but notice the statement:
Matthew 10:19 ESV
19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.
God will give you exactly what to say in the moment.
Yet:
Moses was still scared of Pharaoh (28-30)
Exodus 6:28–30 ESV
28 On the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 the Lord said to Moses, “I am the Lord; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.” 30 But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips. How will Pharaoh listen to me?”
God laid out to Moses that they needed to trust Him and to have faith.
Conclusion
God reminded Moses Who He is.
He is God and all powerful!
You and I can take courage that this is the same God we serve today and that He is All Powerful!
Trust His sovereignty, His will, and His word.
By this power God tells moses:
What He will do.
Egypt was about to feel His authority and see His Authority.
Take a note and begin looking for His authority over your life and his power.
He has a plan, trust Him and make choices that would glorify Him.
Hopefully today you are reminded who Jesus is in all His might and authority and power
Because of Chapter 6 we can find comfort and confidence knowing God called Moses to the job and will provide everything to do it.
Be the deliverer an unsaved person needs today, or tomorrow.
Ask that God reveal who He is to them.
Ask that the Lord reveal to them what He is doing in their lives that brought them to that moment talking with you.
