INTRO:
I am shocked at how many misinterpretations I have encountered on this subject. They didn’t make a lot of sense and had to work pretty hard to dodge the idea that they are still for the church today.
Cessationism versus continuationism is a Christian theological dispute concerned with the question whether the charismatic gifts remain available to the church, or whether their operation ceased with the apostolic age of the church, or soon thereafter. The cessationist doctrine arose in the Protestant Reformation, initially in response to claims of Roman Catholic miracles.
The modern controversy is more focused on the use of charismatic gifts in the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. Historically, the Catholic, Methodist, Moravian, and Pentecostal traditions of Christianity have been continuationist while the Continental Reformed and Presbyterian traditions have been cessationist.
Paul expounds upon Spiritual gifts.
Related Gifts and works of the Holy Spirit was common throughout the early church (e.g., Acts; 1 Thess 5:19–21; Gal 3:5; Heb 2:4).
Prior to that the Gifts are seen in operation through the life and work of Jesus Christ.
The Spirit of God’s work is also seen in the Old Testament.
ILL.
When I was about 11 years old I was in Milan IL at the 4 square church and they had John Beard a prophet called me out in a service and said I would be ministering to black children in foreign countries on basketball courts surrounded by palm trees.
I. GIFT OF PROPHECY
I have heard some far out definitions and misinterpretations of what prophecy is.
Some have reduce modern day prophecy as nothing more than understanding scripture (John Calvin).
One said that the preaching of the scriptures is the modern day prophetic gift
One scholar went as far to say that prophecy does not give a prediction of the future
1 Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.
2 For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.
There was a strong tendency at Corinth to magnify the use of tongues; which the church could not understand. The Apostle rebukes this, and says that it is far better to be able to speak to people in a language they can understand so they can be encouraged. He says that speech in an unknown tongue should be withheld, unless someone could explain and interpret it.
A. UNDERSTANDING THE GIFT OF PROPHECY
Greek Word is Propheteuo - prof-ate-yoo’-o
Prophecy is a divinely inspired and anointed utterance.
The inspired declaration of divine will and purpose
It is a manifestation of God without using human knowledge.
A prediction of something to come
To speak under inspiration: PREACH
B. THE USE OF PROPHECY
1 Corinthians 14:3 (NLT)
3 But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.
3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
Exhortation can be reproof or correction
1 Corinthians 14:4 (NLT)
4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
Read:
1 Corinthians 5-12
Prophecy in the church has been abused over the years.
Using it to manipulate others and control them.
We had a guy using prophecy to try to manipulate a girl to date and ultimately marry him.
There were some prophets that were out of bounds in 2020 concerning the election
Sadly, There have been scandals brought to light recently in the news concerning a prophetic ministry.
Safeguards When Given A Prophecy:
Pray about the prophecy before you act upon it,
Know the “prophets” track record,
Does this confirm what God has been speaking to you?
Does it line up scripturally?
Prophetic words often give direction but there is still a responsibility on our part to follow through and pursue God.
ILL. (grab the plot)
When I lived in GB MI Dick Mills prophecy regarding God giving me land with my name on it. We tried buying land in MI and God closed doors that seem unlikely to close.
ILL
Ed Trout came to our church twice. He prophesied that Pastor Rick had a lot of books in him. Two weeks ago he preached here and his book table had an impressive amount of books he has now written.
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
14 But Amos replied, “I’m not a professional prophet, and I was never trained to be one. I’m just a shepherd, and I take care of sycamore-fig trees.
15 But the Lord called me away from my flock and told me, ‘Go and prophesy to my people in Israel.’
God often calls the unlikely to accomplish the profound
II. GIFT OF TONGUES
Paul shows that the gifts build up the church spiritually in two ways.
Individually - Praying in tongues brings boldness, courage, personal edification, and answered prayers to situations you can’t quite articulate.
1 Corinthians 14:4 (NLT)
4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally,
Corporately
ILLUSTRATION:
In youth one time we had a word and interpretation and an unchurched teenager gave his life to Jesus stating that word was weird (He had never experienced something like that before) but it was to me.
A. Reason for this gift
This gift is to be used for God to speak to men. It is a supernatural utterance never learned by the speaker. These gifts were prophesied by Isaiah and by our Lord
11For with stammering lips and another tongue
He will speak to this people,
17 These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.
B. Regulations of this gift
The gift of tongues in the Corinthian church was a major issue, it was disorderly and chaotic
1 Corinthians 14:23-31
1. It is used mostly for Christians.
2. There is a difference between the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4), and the gift used to help the church. Speaking in tongues in our personal devotion need not be interpreted.
3. Governing
32 Remember that people who prophesy are in control of their spirit and can take turns.
33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people.
4. Paul said that we should forbid not to speak in tongues
39 So, my dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues.
III. GIFT OF INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES
A. Reason.
The gift of interpretation of tongues is used to explain the meaning of the message given in tongues, so that all in the church may be helped
5 I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.
B. Regulation
The one speaking should pray that there be an interpretation
13 So anyone who speaks in tongues should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said.
2. Only one should interpret the message at one time.
3. No more than three messages may be given in any one service
27 No more than two or three should speak in tongues. They must speak one at a time, and someone must interpret what they say.
I have seen the gift of tongues and interpretation be the most used and often the most abused in corporate services.
Paul experienced the same thing in Corinth
CONCLUSION:
