jacob and esau
Intro
Have any of you ever valued something that was so foolish
you look back and you realize that the thing you placed so much time and effort on was really not worth it..
it is especially true when it comes to neglecting relationships
as I say this all of the wives are thinking about the amount of time their husbands are watching football..
today we are going to look at a man named esau who didnt realize just what He had
and how his heart led him to give it all away..
This is the genealogy of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham begot Isaac. Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian. Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived. But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I like this?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.
we get a bit of a recap here
a geneology—account of a family tree
Abraham begot Isaac
Abraham is the person God chose to establish His promise
that all of the famalies of the world would be blessed through Him
This is speaking of the promise of the messiah
Jesus Christ
through His family line
Israel will be established as a nation
and Jesus Christ will be established as the savior of the world
Looking back at verse 21
after they Get married , we see that they had trouble conciving a child
like father like son----
Rebekah can not have kids,
they keep trying for around 20 years
during this trial period
Isaac pleads with the Lord for His wife.
Q. Are you pleading with the Lord for your spouse?
We ought to be praying for our spouses fervently day and night…
Isaac was patient on the Lord
He waited on the Lord
and the Lord heard His prayer the whole time
yet God had purpouse in the waiting.
He has purpouse in the way He answers your prayer
He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them.
Dont stop praying for those you love
If your in Christ
God will hear your prayers
and He will answer according to His plan
Here His plan was to continue the family of Abraham
as rebekah does in fact concieve a child with isaac
during her pregnancy
she starts getting major pains
She is having a troublesome pregnancy
If you know anything about pregnancy,,, when trials hit
like bleeding and cramping ‘
it can be very scary…
Q. When things get scary in our life, What do we do..
Go and inquire of the Lord…
Go and inquire of the Lord…
this means to check in with Him
We ought to be doing this at all times
not just when we find our self in trouble
Rebekah asks the Lord,,, Why am I like this
Why is this happening…
Valid questions for God
and ones We will all ask a time or two in our lives....
God revealed this in verse 23
And the Lord said to her: “Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger.”
God has revealed that rebekah is carrying twins
not only that but that each child will lead a nation
and furthermore the younger child will lead over the older
God has chosen one child to carry on the promise that was given to Abraham
So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. So the boys grew. And Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents. And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
We are now introduced to Jacob and Esau
Rebeckah gives birth to her twins
and the first to come out is Esau
He was red and hairy all over
He was certainly was not the cuter of the two babies
people say there is no such thing as an ugly baby
but esau certainly must have mad a strong case against that
After esau came jacob
as He grasped on to Esaus heel
someone who was a trickster or con man would have been called a heel catcher
this is where we get the idea that jacob means deciever
and we will see why in a minute
The scripture continues to contrast the two brothers
Jacob is a mild man who was more interested in staying in the tents and
clearly was able to make a killer stew
While Esau was much more manly,
one who was skilled at hunting
unfortunately both parents played favorites....
Jacob favored Esau because He was able to eat of the animals He would hunt
and Rebeckah favored Jacob
The brothers grew up together
and they eventually got into a heated exchange
Im sure some of you are all too farmiliar with these interactions with your siblings…
Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom. But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.” And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?” Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Jacob is making his killer stew
probably with meat from esaus hunting....
and when Esau comes in from a long time in the field
He is simply asking his brother for something to eat…
If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
It is blatantly obvious that Jacob should have given his brother some food.
but instead Jacob siezes the opportunity to bribe his brother.
Jacob pruposes a trade
-I will give you some of my stew if you sell me your birthright..
The birthright was given to the oldest son and included a double portion of material blessing at the death of the father
and a spiritual blessing to continue as head of the family
Esau decided to himself,
I am about to die… I think it may have been more like
im so hungry I could die
He was Hangry… anyone ever been Hangry…
Esau did not hold the birthright in High esteem
and Jacob demanded.. Swear it to me
So Esau swore over his birthright as oldest son to Esau for bread and bean soup …
These last words sum up the point
Thus Esau despised His birth right.
Q. How could He have something so precious
yet consider it to be so worthless?
Esau valued material things over spiritual things
and that brings us to our next point
Value spiritual things
Value spiritual things
It is very easy to become enamoured with the material world
with things that you can taste, smell, see, hear, and touch
Entertainment, food, money, games,
It is very easy to elevate these things over spiritual things and
this is what Esau did
He did not care about the spiritual blessing
and inheritance of the promise Given to Abraham
It was not important to him at all
its like this
the bible is the written word of God .....
is that valuable to you?
Q. what do you own that is more valuable than this?
lets place a higher value on the eternal things and less on the things that will pass away.
Esau did not value his birthright
mostly because he was unable to see its value
and that brings us to our next point
Hold fast to your birthright
Hold fast to your birthright
Esau let this slip through his fingers
for a bowl of bean soup
hold fast to your birth right as a christian

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
