Q43 What is the fourth commandment? A43 - The fourth commandment is, "Guard the sabbath day to keep it holy," which reserves one day in seven for worship, rest and realigning our desires with God's (Deut 5.12)
Interaction: What is a gift given to you that you don’t want at first but want later? PAUSE LET THEM ANSWER How about a polio vaccine? Exercise? Vegetables rather than Twinkies? Some things we would rather not have but later on we are really glad we got that instead of what we would have wanted. How about another example? What about a break? A rest, a chance to recover? We have all been there, it is late and we want to watch the movie but we know we should go to bed but we stay up later and later and then the next day is lost because we sleep in. We really should have gone to bed at a reasonable time and then we would have been able to get much more done the next day.
Scripture example Mark 2:23–28“And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; how he entered the house of God around the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?” And Jesus was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. “Consequently the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.””
Transition to Question and Answer: God has given a great gift to people even before He gave the ten commandments, He established a day of rest after He made the world. He gave people one day in seven specifically to do what we were designed to do. What is the purpose of people? … That is what the Sabbath is for. It is not a burden, it is not a “have to” it is a “get to”. It is not about rules of do or don’t it is about turning from our normal desires to refocus on the Lord
Question and Answer: So here is tonight’s question: Q43 What is the fourth commandment? A43 - The fourth commandment is, "Guard the sabbath day to keep it holy," which reserves one day in seven for worship, rest and realigning our desires with God's Deuteronomy 5:12“‘Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you.”
Restate: One day out of seven we get to take our minds off our daily chores, tasks and work and focus upon God. This is what we were made for.
Ask if anyone has questions then define terminology
Definitions and Examples for Key Terms
Sabbath Definition: A day of rest and worship, in the Old Testament the seventh day of the week, instituted by God as part of the Ten Commandments but now called the Lord’s day in the New Testament and is the first day of the week. Cross-References: Revelation 1:10“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,”
Holy Definition: Set apart for a sacred purpose, pure, and dedicated to God.Example: Keeping the Sabbath holy means using it for worship, rest, and reflection on God’s goodness.Cross-References: Isaiah 58:13–14““If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own desire on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of Yahweh honorable, And honor it, by not doing your own ways, By not finding your own desire And speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in Yahweh, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the inheritance of Jacob your father, For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.””
Worship Definition: The act of showing reverence and adoration for God through prayer, praise, and service. Example: On the Sabbath, believers attend church services and engage in private or corporate worship to honor God.Cross-References: John 4:24 ““God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.””
Realigning Definition: Adjusting or bringing back into proper alignment or harmony with God's will. Example: The Sabbath is a time to reset our focus on God’s purposes, ensuring our desires reflect His.Cross-References: Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in Yahweh; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Questions for them to answer: So why don’t more Christian’s take a day in seven to rest? WAIT TO LET THEM ANSWER It could really be because they haven’t seen it done so they don’t know what it looks like.
Why does this matter? The sabbath or Day of the Lord is not a burden, it is not a “have to” it is a “get to” and interestingly if we honor God in this we find time to do all the things that we need to do in the other six days He has given us

Question 115 Which is the fourth commandment?
The fourth commandment is, Remember the sabbath-day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested in the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day and hallowed it. (Exod. 20:8–11)

The fourth commandment requireth of all men the sanctifying or keeping holy to God such set times as he hath appointed in his word, expressly one whole day in seven; which was the seventh from the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, and the first day of the week ever since, and so to continue to the end of the world; which is the Christian sabbath, (Deut. 5:12–14, Gen. 2:2–3, 1 Cor. 16:1–2, Matt. 5:17–18, Isa. 56:2,4,6–7) and in the New Testament called The Lord’ s day. (Rev. 1:10)
Question 117 How is the sabbath or the Lord’s day to be sanctified?
The sabbath or Lord’s day is to be sanctified by an holy resting all the day, (Exod. 20:8,10) not only from such works as are at all times sinful, but even from such worldly employments and recreations as are on other days lawful; (Exod. 16:25–28, Neh. 13:15–22, Jer. 17:21–22) and making it our delight to spend the whole time (except so much of it as is to be taken up in works of necessity and mercy (Matt. 12:1–13) ) in the public and private exercises of God’ s worship: (Isa. 58:13, Luke 4:16, Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 16:1–2, Ps. 92, Isa. 66:23, Lev. 23:3) and, to that end, we are to prepare our hearts, and with such foresight, diligence, and moderation, to dispose and seasonably dispatch our worldly business, that we may be the more free and fit for the duties of that day. (Exod. 20:8,56, Luke 23:54, Exod. 16:22,25-26,29)
Question 118 Why is the charge of keeping the sabbath more specially directed to governors of families, and other superiors?
The charge of keeping the sabbath is more specially directed to governors of families, and other superiors, because they are bound not only to keep it themselves, but to see that it be observed by all those that are under their charge; and because they are prone ofttimes to hinder them by employments of their own. (Exod. 20:10, Josh. 24:15, Neh. 13:15,17, Jer. 17:20–22, Exod. 23:12)
Question 119 What are the sins forbidden in the fourth commandment?
The sins forbidden in the fourth commandment are, all omissions of the duties required, (Ezek. 22:26) all careless, negligent, and unprofitable performing of them, and being weary of them; (Acts 20:7,9, Ezek. 33:30–32, Amos 8:5, Mal. 1:13) all profaning the day by idleness, and doing that which is in itself sinful; (Ezek. 23:38) and by all needless works, words, and thoughts, about our worldly employments and recreations. (Jer. 17:24,27, Isa. 58:13)
Question 120 What are the reasons annexed to the fourth commandment, the more to enforce it?
The reasons annexed to the fourth commandment, the more to enforce it, are taken from the equity of it, God allowing us six days of seven for our own affairs, and reserving but one for himself in these words, Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: (Exod. 20:9) from God’ s challenging a special propriety in that day, The seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: (Exod. 20:10) from the example of God, who in six days made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: and from that blessing which God put upon that day, not only in sanctifying it to be a day for his service, but in ordaining it to be a means of blessing to us in our sanctifying it; Wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath-day, and hallowed it. (Exod. 20:11)
Question 121 Why is the Word Remember set in the beginning of the fourth commandment?
The word Remember is set in the beginning of the fourth commandment, (Exod. 20:8) partly, because of the great benefit of remembering it, we being thereby helped in our preparation to keep it, (Exod. 16:23, Luke 23:54,56, Mark 15:42, Neh. 13:19) and, in keeping it, better to keep all the rest of the commandments, (Ps. 92:13–14, Ezek. 20:12,19–20) and to continue a thankful remembrance of the two great benefits of creation and redemption, which contain a short abridgment of religion; (Gen. 2:2–3, Ps. 118:22,24, Acts 4:10–11, Rev. 1:10) and partly, because we are very ready to forget it, (Ezek. 22:26) for that there is less light of nature for it, (Neh. 9:14) and yet it restraineth our natural liberty in things at other times lawful; (Exod. 34:21) that it cometh but once in seven days, and many worldly businesses come between, and too often take off our minds from thinking of it, either to prepare for it, or to sanctify it; (Deut. 5:14–15, Amos 8:5) and that Satan with his instruments labours much to blot out the glory, and even the memory of it, to bring in all irreligion and impiety. (Lam. 1:7, Jer. 17:21–23, Neh. 13:15–23)
