Exodus 2:1–14 “Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi.

And the woman conceived and gave birth to a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months.

But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a papyrus basket and covered it with tar and pitch. Then she put the child in it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile.

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother.

Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.

And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Now it came about in those days, when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his fellow Hebrews and looked at their hard labors; and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his fellow Hebrews.

So he looked this way and that, and when he saw that there was no one around, he struck and killed the Egyptian, and hid his body in the sand.

Now he went out the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were fighting with each other; and he said to the offender, “Why are you striking your companion?”

But he said, “Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known!”

My subject today is, “Mistaken Identity”

Introduction (介绍)
In a very real sense, human existence- or life, to put it simply- is the collective result of our decisions. Or so it would seem, because above & beyond our decisions- the product of the gift known as free will, is the will and plan of God who exists in eternity, and who created time.

In His infinite wisdom, He somehow makes a way to honor the gift of free will without allowing it to interfere with His sovereignty, even in the slightest way.

How this is done is a mystery to us, but as we look over our lives it is clear that there are particular points in the timeline of one’s existence that are crucial to one’s development and propel us to our destiny- that for which each of us was born, and was a part of God’s plan for all life before its inception. Some of these events we might call…mistakes.

And since our subject is Mistakes, let me quickly remind you how this all began- our literal Genesis: the story of Adam & Eve.

The event known as “The Fall” not only set the trajectory for all of human history, but it also set the stage for the Gospel itself.

The Gospel message does not begin in the New Testament; it is found throughout the entire Bible, and God’s intention is established from the very beginning.

Gen 3:15 is known in theological terms as the “proto-evangelion” or the “first gospel” where we are told that the seed of the woman (a collective noun, meaning it pertains to all subsequent seed, i.e. all of us) will overcome the serpent.

Of course, this would be ultimately accomplished by the ultimate seed of a woman, Jesus the Christ. My point: the story of humanity and the introduction of our salvation began with...a mistake.

But as it relates to the life of the man named Moses, there are many such events that we could consider.

An excellent example of such would be His introduction to Yahweh, the proper Name of God in Hebrew, at the base of Mt. Sinai- the account known as, “The Burning Bush.” in Ex 3:1-14.

There are many lessons found in that account in particular, but I think when we search the scriptures we sometimes overlook the most obvious lessons. Case in point: Moses met God in the flames.

Don’t avoid the heat of your trials- that’s where you will meet God! Stay there, until you see the “4th Man in the flames” (Dan 3:16-28).

I came here to let someone know, “Stay there- meet God in the flames!”

But if you want to understand essence of a thing, you must start at the beginning. Some of us are struggling to address certain issues even now because we are playing with the trunk instead of dealing with the roots. Selah! (The Hebrew word we often find in the book of Psalms which means, “to pause and consider”.)

So I want to draw your attention to the first two of such notable events in his life: Moses’ birth, and the killing of the Egyptian overseer- an act which forced him to flee from Egypt, Pharaoh, as well as royal family who raised him. and from the people from which he came.

You know this story and how it begins. The Pharaoh issued an edict that every male child of the children of Israel should be killed by drowning, after the midwives refused to do the job themselves.

There are a few elements to the story that I find to be fascinating. Let’s begin with the name that he is given.

We are not given an exact timeline for the official “adoption” of Moses into the royal Egyptian family. We know that He was a child when his mother presented him again to Pharaoh’s daughter, Bithiah (V.10).

It’s interesting that no name was referenced prior to the one given to him by the Egyptian princess. The name “Moses” (“Moshe”) is a conjunction of 2 Egyptian words, “mo” meaning “Water” and “uses” or “sha” meaning, “saved or drawn from”.
有趣的是,在埃及公主给他起的名字之前,没有提到任何名字。 “摩西”(“Moshe”)这个名字是两个埃及单词的连词,“mo”意思是“水”,“使用”或“sha”意思是“保存”或“取自”。
What we know to be true because the author- Moses- tells us this, is that he was named after the circumstances in which he was discovered. Every time someone called his name, it was a reminder of where he came from.

People may call you based on where you came from or your current circumstances- every time they call you, they remind you where you came from, and some do so in an attempt to keep you chained to your place of origin; but God calls you with His destiny- and the destination- that He has in mind for you.

They can call you by your past- your mistakes- but what matters is this: what name do you answer to? Don’t let them call you a mistake!

By what name did his parents call him? I cannot imagine that his father and mother- both of whom where descendants from the tribe of Levitical priests- didn’t give him a name!

I suspect that his birth mother, who had already demonstrated exceptional vision and faith by saving him and then sending him down the river, had some indication that God had a plan for this child. Do you mind if I take a moment to defend my hypothesis?

The 1st hint is in EX 2:2. She hid him because…he was beautiful?

What mother doesn’t think their child is beautiful, whether it is justified or not?!?! {pause- this is a joke!} Perhaps there’s something more to this description...

In 1 Sam 16:12, David is described as “beautiful and of handsome appearance”. moments later he is anointed by the Prophet to be King.

I can lift up other examples from scripture but instead let us look at the book of nature.

The waves are described as beautiful, but they serve a purpose- they drag impurities into the depths of the sea.

The sun is described as beautiful, but it not only provides heat but is a critical part of a process known as photosynthesis, how plants convert sunlight into energy & produces nearly all of the oxygen in our atmosphere.

We see beauty, perfectly blended with purpose; I call it God’s signature.

And that is my point: we see superficial beauty, but God sees fundamental purpose!

And perhaps that’s what Moses’ mother saw when she looked at him with spiritual eyes. So I submit to you that it seems clear that his mother saw that God had a purpose for him.
也许这就是摩西的母亲用属灵的眼睛看着他时所看到的。所以我向你提出,他的母亲显然看到上帝对他有一个目的。
We are not told when his true identity was revealed to Moses. Perhaps he always knew on some level that he was different.

He didn’t look like his contemporaries. He had the same teachers, dressed in the same clothes. He lived like an Egyptian, but the truth is that he never was.

We are in this world but not of it; we were born into the culture, raised up in it, we “wear it” but it does not change who we are after our adoption into the TRUE royal family.

In V.11, Moses has grown up. It is clear that he knows his true identity, and feels trapped between two worlds. He knows that no matter what he does, he will never be enough to be accepted by the Egyptians.

Conversely, he is not truly connected with his fellow Hebrews; he was raised in privilege, while they remained in bondage; they were worlds apart.

One day, he sees what he thinks is an opportunity to connect with his people. In defense of a Hebrew man who was being beaten, he killed the Egyptian.

So what was Moses’ mistake? The obvious answer is that he took a man’s life. Now we can try to contextualize it, but I don’t want to diminish the gravity of this issue. Moses committed murder.

He was not being attacked, he was not trying to bring the offender to justice or to merely rescue his fellow Hebrew. He waited until he thought no one was watching and took matters into his own hands.

Some of us will literally kill to be accepted by people who will never accept you in your current position.

They see your past…and resent your success. They say, “Why were you rescued, and not me?” Why were you blessed, and I’m still struggling?”

Please understand this doesn’t just apply to the secular world; unfortunately, Christians compare ourselves to other Christians all the time. We say things like, “How did you get married before I did?” “Why are you being used by God, and not me?”

Paul said in 2 Corinthians 10:12 “For we do not presume to rank or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they have no understanding.”

Stop comparing yourselves to others- you have no idea what it took for them to get where they are.

Moments ago, I made a strong statement, and I will repeat it: Some of us will literally kill to be accepted by people who will never accept you.

To clarify, the person that you ultimately wind up killing is yourself. By attempting to gain the acceptance of men, you greatly undervalue God’s unique purpose for you.

The simple truth about this matter with the Egyptian is that it was not Moses’ place or time to act. When we move outside of God’s timing, actions that were intended to save lives can take lives instead.

But like Adam & Eve, his mistake didn’t disqualify him- it launched him into his destiny. But I want to ask you the question again: What was his mistake…truly?

As I prepared for today, the Lord caused me to consider the etymology of the words “mistake” and “mistaken” as a derivative. It comes from the late middle English word “mistaka”, meaning, “to take in error, to miscarry”.
当我为今天做准备时,主让我思考“错误”和“错误”这两个词的词源。它来自中古晚期英语单词“mistaka”,意思是“犯错误、流产”。
In other words, “to take something into one’s hands that didn’t belong to you-whether an item that was not meant to be in your possession or a decision that you were not intended to make ever or in that point in time.” So here’s my answer to the question:

Moses’ true mistake was putting his hands on something that didn’t belong to him- those were God’s people, and their freedom was not dependent upon the actions any men.

Individually and collectively, we can accomplish close to nothing without God! We don’t do the saving, we point the way to the savior with our very existence.

Let them see God turn a murderer into a minister, and your mess into a ministry! Zechariah said it best: “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of armies.”
让他们看到神把一个杀人犯变成一个牧师,把你的烂摊子变成一个事工!撒迦利亚说得最好:“万军之耶和华说,不是靠势力,也不是靠能力,而是靠我的灵。”
Understand this: God never loses sight of His grand design.

While Moses was focused on a single soldier, God already had a plan in place to take out the entire army; while he was focused on winning approval by freeing one person, God already had a plan to free an entire nation! So Don’t be ‘mis-taken’; leave it in God’s hands!
当摩西专注于单个士兵时,上帝已经制定了一个计划来消灭整个军队;当他专注于通过解放一个人来赢得认可时,上帝已经有了一个解放整个国家的计划!所以不要被“误会”;把它交在上帝的手中!
Let’s discuss one more event before we conclude. Before the end of chapter 2, Moses has fled from Egypt to a place called Midian.

There, he defends a group of women, and then helps them with the task of watering the flock. This time he defends, but he does not kill.

This is while he’s on the run…while he is uncertain about the future. Despite this, he finds work to do, and finds a wife among the people who provided him with refuge for a season. Again, he was on the run- this was not his home, these were not his people.

It is not in familiar spaces, and in comfort that we discover who we are- it is in our trials, in our mistakes- and more specifially, how we handle them- that we discover who we really are.

I want to remind you that this is Moses, telling his own story. He does not hide the mistakes of his past, because in doing so he would rob God out of His glory for redeeming those same mistakes.

The Apostle Paul, a well versed student of Jewish history, discusses these same events in Acts 7. I just want you to hear how Paul sums it all up in verses 35–38:

This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet Like me from your countrymen.’

This is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness together with the angel who spoke to him at length on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received living words to pass on to you.”

So when people would ask, “What does it take for God to raise up a man who would rescue and lead a nation?” The life of Moses provided a vivid answer.

In conclusion, I want to ask you these questions.

Can God raise up a Chinese ministry in Flushing Queens that would transform the whole city, in Jesus Name?

Can God redeem every past mistake, find purpose in weakness, use every thorn to show the world that His grace is sufficient, for His strength is perfected in our weakness?
神能否赎回过去的每一个错误,在软弱中找到目的,用每一根荆棘向世界表明他的恩典是足够的,因为他的力量在我们的软弱上显得更加完美?
My answer is this:

This can be the ministry that will transform the whole city, in Jesus Name! God can do it!

Yes! Jesus has redeemed every past mistake, found purpose in our weakness and is using every thorn to show the world that His grace is sufficient, for His strength is perfected in our weakness!
是的!耶稣已经赎回了过去的每一个错误,在我们的软弱中找到了目的,并且正在使用每一根荆棘向世界表明他的恩典是足够的,因为他的力量在我们的软弱中显得更加完美!
Because our God never makes “mis-takes”! He never has, and He never will! What He touches He transforms; what He redeems He gives a revelation for His glory!
因为我们的神永远不会犯“错误”!他从来没有,也永远不会!他所触及的,他会改变;他所救赎的,他为了他的荣耀而给予启示!
If you believe that our God makes no mistakes- or as the the write of one famous hymn would say, “In Him there is no failure” then let bless God is our worship today, and our service when we depart from this place!
