THROWING GOD OVER A CLIFF
Luke 4:14-29
Introduction:
It was just another day at the synagogue until Jesus arrived as the guest speaker with a message that was sure to set their minds on edge. The passage He used as His Scripture reading was a powerful one indeed. But how He applied it left them with a smile of uncertainty on their faces. After a moment of further reflection as they took in Jesus’ sermon, they became incensed and decided to form a lynch mob. They took Him out of the city and prepared to toss Him over a cliff.
But this incident is recorded, no doubt, to let us know that you and I aren’t really much different. We would have probably reacted the same way.
So, let’s identify 3 mistakes they made that we need to avoid today.
Discussion:
THE TRAGEDY OF NOT TAKING JESUS SERIOUSLY (Luke 4:20-22):
We redirect Scripture to apply to others.
We read the Bible as if it is just good literature.
THE TEMPTATION OF BEING SELF-SATISFIED (Luke 4:23):
We don’t see the bad in us.
We don’t see the need to change.
THE TRANSGRESSION OF BEING SHORT ON MERCY (Luke 4:24-27):
We believe God plays favorites.
We belittle God’s mercy.
Conclusion:
Have you thrown Jesus over a cliff?
