THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Acts 19:1–2 “1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. 2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit is the key to living a holy life. You cannot live a holy life without the Holy Spirit. There is a general ignorance today concerning the person and work of the Holy Spirit. The purpose of this message is to clarify in your minds things which you need to know concerning “The Ministry of the Holy Spirit.”

I. Who the Holy Spirit is.

A. The Holy Spirit is God:

Acts 5:3–4 “3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. 4 The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!”

B. The Holy Spirit is a Person:

John 14:16–17 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”

C. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity:

Matthew 28:19–20 “19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

D. The Holy Spirit is eternal:

Hebrews 9:14 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.”

E. The Holy Spirit is Omnipresent (All-seeing):

Psalm 139:7 “7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!

F. The Holy Spirit is Omniscient (All-knowing):

1 Corinthians 2:10–11 10 But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. 11 No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.”

G. The Holy Spirit is Omnipotent (All-powerful):

Romans 15:19 “19 They were convinced by the power of miraculous signs and wonders and by the power of God’s Spirit. In this way, I have fully presented the Good News of Christ from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum.”

II. What the Holy Spirit does in relation to the saved.

A. He abides in the Christian’s heart through the new birth:

Again, we read in John 14:16 “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.”

B. He dwells in the Christian’s body as His temple:

1 Corinthians 3:16 “16 Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?”

C. He adopts the individual into God’s family:

Romans 8:15 “15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”

D. He seals the Christian until the day of the final redemption into Heaven:

Ephesians 1:13 “13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.”

E. He desires to teach the Christian:

John 14:26 “26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

F. He desires to guide the Christian’s life:

John 16:13 “13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

G. He desires to control the Christian’s life:

Ephesians 5:18 “18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,

H. He desires to pray (make intercession) for the Christian:

Romans 8:26–27 “26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.”

I. He desires to perfect the person of Christ in the Christian’s life:

Romans 8:28–29 “28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”

J. He desires to set the Christian apart for God’s use:

Romans 15:16 “16 I am a special messenger from Christ Jesus to you Gentiles. I bring you the Good News so that I might present you as an acceptable offering to God, made holy by the Holy Spirit.”

K. He desires to impart the love of God in and through the Christian’s life:

Romans 5:5 “5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

L. He desires to impart joy to the Christian’s life:

Romans 14:17–18 “17 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too.”

M. He desires to impart life in the Christian’s life:

Romans 15:13 “13 I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

N. He desires to plant the fruit of the Spirit in the Christian’s life:

Galatians 5:22–23 “22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

III. What the Holy Spirit does in relation to the unsaved.

A. He strives with the sinner in regard to his sinful condition:

Genesis 6:2–3 “2 The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”.

B. He convicts the sinner of sin:

John 16:8–9 “8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.”

C. He desires to work the miracle of the new birth in the sinner’s life:

John 3:5 “5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.”

To ignore and quench the Holy Spirit is to doom the sinner to a Christ-less eternity. For the believer to be ignorant of the working of the Holy Spirit is to be doomed to a useless life on earth and a life without reward in Heaven.
