Pilate’s pleading

Pilate spends a decent portion of time trying to convince the Jews and Jesus that this is all ridiculous

what kind of man faces crucifixion willingly and seems like he means to go do it

what kind of leaders execute harmless people that speak in riddles and just seem a little crazy from the outside looking in?

Pilate has never seen anything like these people

he would rather call Jesus their king than these psuedo-rulers using his own emperor against him

The Crucifixion

Jesus is led to be crucified

John gives all the necessary detail while leaving out a lot of the conversations that the others give

John takes Jesus’ family away

maybe that’s why he doesn’t have some of the other stories

maybe he doesn’t like reliving it

Jesus fulfills the scriptures and gives up his spirit like he always had and always will

That you may believe

the purpose of John’s gospel

the purpose of all the gospels and all the scriptures

so that knowing the story you will believe and have life

how can you come to know the one who died for you in that way

the one who lived for the sake of other people to the end, and not want to walk with him

how could you not want that life for yourself and others?

Application

if you really love him, you’ll do the work he has given you

you’ll do the good you have to do at every opportunity for it

you’ll give to others what they need

you’ll go even when you are lead somewhere you don’t want to for the sake of others
