James 1:19–20 ESV
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Title: Don’t hold the potato
**Prayer**

*pray*
Anger: An emotional characteristic caused by tension and hostility, arising from frustration - due to a real or imagined injury by another, or perceived injustice.
Mat Translation; the Grrrr feeling you get.
Proverbs - Anger is always, not sometimes, always - associated with foolishness, not wisdom.
Ecclesiastes 7:9 ESV
Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.
Lodges in the heart of fools.
*Car story*
What does anger do?
Gives opportunity to the Devil.
Steal peace - Kill opportunity to reconciliation and destroys your witness.
Today - Unpack a passage Ephesians | Quick Story | 3 things to do, to trade anger for peace.
Ephesians 4:26 ESV
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Be angry - Amen ?
Ephesiasn 4:26 = Septuagint - Greek version Hebrew text;
Psalm 4:4 ESV
Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah
Ephesians 4:27 ESV
and give no opportunity to the devil.
Opportunity = Foothold = A space, room.
Anger starts with an offense.
Being offended is inevitable
Living offended is a choice
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Ephesians 4:30–32 ESV
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Not just more words - but process.
Bitterness = Pikria = The resentful spirit which refuses reconciliation.
Wrath = Thymos and Anger = Orge = Vomit of emotion or energy toward someone.
Clamour = Krauge = loud self-assertion which will make everyone hear the grievance
Slander = Blasphemia - Slanderous or abusive speaking against the body.
Last word
Malice = Kakia = Summarising word.
INSTEAD - Be kind - Tenderhearted - Forgiving one another as…
as = Kathos = A likeness - between the way God forgave us, and the way we forgave each other.
Easy right?
Tree top walk - Sounds great - Get up there - wobbling - no longer want to do it - Find yourself in a place you’ve never been!
Not new problem - Let’s go back to Genesis.
Cain and Abel.
Genesis 4:3–5 ESV
In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.
Cain was Angry - By the way, Cain didn’t bring the FIRST.
Genesis 4:6–7 ESV
The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
Sin is crouching at door = It’s waiting - bible says = Enemy is prowling around, and your anger is giving him a foothold, a space - Somewhere to be.
Microwave the Potato - Throw the potato around
What happens when you hold a hot potato? = burns.
Longer you hold it = More it burns.
James 1:20 ESV
for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
More opportunity the devil has to devour your peace and joy.
What happened to Cain?
Cain wasn’t abel to control his anger - He held it, He operated out of it.
Genesis 4:8 ESV
Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
Now, you might not kill anyone…but it will steal your peace and your Joy and hurt the body of Christ.
Hebrews 12:15 ESV
See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;
What do we do?
1. We put off the old self
Something else going on here - Take a step back.
Ephesians 4:17 ESV
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
Ephesians 4:19 ESV
They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
Ephesians 4:20 ESV
But that is not the way you learned Christ!—
Ephesians 4:21–24 ESV
assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Put off old Self | When you choose to throw potato away = you are denying yourself, choosing NOT TO gratify desires of flesh.
If same things making you angry now as when you where before Christian then you have to ask;
Is this my flesh?
Need to put on New Self.
2. We throw the potato away
Colossians 3:8 ESV
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Told to put away - and do complete opposite.
We are told to put it away - and in complete opposite;
Romans 12:17 ESV
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.
Truth in Love, is not Truth in Anger.
That’s the point; Thing that makes your anger “Righteous” is probably the thing your being asked to forgive. Grace isn’t for deserving - Forgiving is surrendering your right to resentment and anger.
Anger is our old self.
Love is our new self.
Romans 12:19 ESV
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
3. We repent - We change our mind
Revelation 16 - God is pouring out His Wrath.
Revelation 16:9 ESV
They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.
Revelation 16:10–11 ESV
The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds.
Did you catch it?
Even as God is pouring out Wrath on Evil in this world - Given Opportunity to change their minds - Offers them Forgiveness.
Why?
Because there are holes in our Lord’s hand and feet - Where he hung on a cross and gave us opporunity to be forgiven.
Because he loves you.
Quesiton:
Have you given same opportunity at the person you are angry at?
We have a choice - Gratify the flesh, or put on your new self - the mind of Christ.
Gratify flesh - Lead to destruction
New Self - Life and Peace.
Being offended is inevatable
Living offendied is a choice
A divided world needs a united Church.
Love moved first on you, so Love can now move first IN YOU.
