Romans 5 - Hope in the Second Adam
Notes
Transcript
The New Testament focuses the Christian life on three attributes
Faith, Hope, and Love.
Romans is structured this way.
Faith: Romans 1-4
Hope: Romans 5-11
Love: Romans 12-16
This begins the section of Romans about Hope and our first topic is to compare Adam and Christ.
Hope is confidence the believers can have in Christ.
Romans 5:1-11 Hope that believers have that we will experience future glory
Topics in this paragraph:
Peace, hope, the Spirit, the cross, and salvation
Verse 1 Justification (by faith) brings peace with God
What does that imply? We were not at peace with God before justification.
Romans 5:10 says that we were enemies.
What good is peace with God? verse 2-3 has the answer
Grant access to God’s Grace.
Rejoice in the hope of glory of God. (Every Genuine Christian I know looks forward to heaven.)
Progressive Sanctification (Christians don’t immediately become perfect)
glory in tribulation -> perseverance -> character -> HOPE
Glory in tribulation - WHAT? WHY?
They hated Jesus first.
John 15:18–19 If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Perseverance - (KJV - patience) - hopeful endurance or consistency
It is the ability to keep at Matthew 24:13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
The Christian Life is a marathon it isn’t a sprint. A lot of people treat it like a sprint.
Character - (KJV - Experience) or moral excellence and firmness
This goes beyond perseverance this is commitment to the cause of Christ. I have laid a lot of people to rest. Some people we have to hunt for their faith. Some their is no question it was their character. Picture this guy I remember Johny going to Sunday School and accepting Jesus, he didn’t always live it but. That is a skin of the teeth hope of glory. What Paul is talking about here is faithful servant of God Hope of glory
Saved by the Skin of their teeth vs real hope
Job 19:20–27 “My bone clings to my skin and to my flesh, And I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. “Have pity on me, have pity on me, O you my friends, For the hand of God has struck me! Why do you persecute me as God does, And are not satisfied with my flesh? “Oh, that my words were written! Oh, that they were inscribed in a book! That they were engraved on a rock With an iron pen and lead, forever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!”
Suffering leads to perseverance leads to character leads to hope
You can’t skip steps. Job is the example. He had to suffer to get real character. That isn’t good news. The church of today hasn’t suffered we lack character therefore we don’t have the secure hope.
Hope doesn’t disappoint!
2 Timothy 4:7–8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.
Love of God in our heats. The Holy Spirit gave it to us. (Supernatural Love)
Romans 5:12-21 Hope that believers have that we will have new life in Christ
