Text: 2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
Intro: Today, we are going to consider a very familiar verse. Maybe one that most of us can quote. The focus today, is not on the Bible itself however, but it is on the effect that God intends for the Bible to have in each of our lives. With that however, the focus will inevitably on the Bible!
Ultimately our goal in this Christian life is not to be successful at my job, not to make “x” amount of money, not to have this many followers on my social media platforms, but… The number one things, that should be all of our hearts pursuit is know God! It is the very reason that He gave us His word! That we might know Him, and through it, be made into the image of His dear SON!
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
Jesus says to the Jews, they did not know God, but here it is, that we get the opportunity through the One that knew God from the beginning, to know Him!
John says 1 John 2:13 “I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one...”
Profitable: The Scripture is profitable because it’s source is God!
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.
Because of it’s source, it brings sustenance, but the word of God becomes profitable for us when we begin to see it for what it is. It is our spiritual food, given by God, for our good and for our nourishment.
Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips;
I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
Jeremiah 15:16 (KJV 1900)
Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
For Doctrine: 1 Tim. 1:3
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
The word doctrine is found 56 times in our King James Bible, and 50 of those times are in the New Testament.
Our doctrine must come from Scripture… Not a book, not a teacher, not some man that seems smarter than most. The word of God is profitable for doctrine.
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
If you want to live a godly life, then the process begins with correct doctrine… We must...
Know right Doctrine
Believe right Doctrine
Embrace right Doctrine.
And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
For Reproof: If any of us are really serious about knowing God, then we must be willing to be reproved. Not only must we be willing to be reproved, but we must respond to that reproof with the correct attitude.
When one can receive a reproof with gratefulness, then it is a testimony of your spiritual maturity.
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light;
And reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
A reproof, is found in God’s word, and it is simply when the light of truth is shone upon our error. Don’t let pride stand in your way, let God teach you, and sometimes that is through a brother or sister in Christ. Embrace it for your good, and for God’s glory!
Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction:
But he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction:
But he that refuseth reproof erreth.
What about the one that hates is...
Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way:
And he that hateth reproof shall die.
Here is our proper response.
Turn you at my reproof:
Behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you,
I will make known my words unto you.
For Correction: Reproof is when we are shown our error… Correction is the instruction that shows us the action to fix our error. If reproof is showing me where I was wrong, then correction is that which shows me how to correct my error.
My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord;
Neither be weary of his correction:
In our Sunday afternoon services we have been studying church history through Revelation 2-3. One of our points of emphasis has been the correction offered. Revelation 2:4–5 “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.”
Instruction in righteousness: The Bible tells us… Romans 3:10 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
The instruction in righteousness is that which comes from the mind of God, to us through His word.
It is the step by step guide on how to get there…
Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge:
But he that hateth reproof is brutish.
But it isn’t just instruction, but instruction in righteousness...
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
Instruction is the act of teaching , bringing someone to understanding through the basis of the Scriptures.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
In order to receive we must trust the instructor.
Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right;
And I hate every false way.
I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go:
I will guide thee with mine eye.
Be ye not as the horse,
Or as the mule, which have no understanding:
Whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle,
Lest they come near unto thee.
Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go:
Keep her; for she is thy life.
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
Product...
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
