Power in Preaching
Power in Preaching
Introduction
Welcome
Pray
James 3:1 “Do not, many of you, become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment.”
Greek for power - (dynamis)
Read Jonah 3:1-10.
The Word of God Restores (1-2)
v. 1-2 exact same message in chapter 1.
God is a God of 2nd chances
“The returning of something or someone to their original state. Through the redeeming work of Jesus Christ, both humanity and creation will eventually be restored.” -Manser
2. The Word of God Preaches (3-4)
Define 2 terms...
Preaching - “Preaching is the public exposition of Scripture by the man sent from God, in which God Himself is present in judgment and in grace.”- Calvin
Conviction - “The act of convincing a person of error or of compelling the admission of a truth; a strong persuasion or belief.”
1 Corinthians 2:2“For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”
“He also was reminded that the message would not come from him nor from anyone else, but only from the Lord. His job was to deliver the message, not to critique or revise it.” - Smith & Page
Commanded to! (2 Tim 4:2)
Preachers in the Bible, Church History, Today.
State of the church.
3. The Word of God Humbles (5-9)
C/E
“From the greatest to the least of them.” The message is for ALL!
Even the king is humbled (Dan 4:37), believed (Mk 1:18), and terrified (Heb 10:31).
Just like the pagan sailors, they converted to Yahweh.
v. 7-9 had a better understanding grace then the prophet.
4. The Word of God Relents (10)
All a supernatural work of the Spirit.
Psalm 53:2–3“God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there is anyone who has insight, Anyone who seeks after God. Every one of them has turned back; together they have become worthless; There is no one who does good, not even one.”
Relented > To turn back.
God’s love & wrath often misunderstood.

Do you believe in the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit?
