Title: "A Name Blessed by God"
Scripture Reading:
1 Samuel 1:27-28: "I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.”
Numbers 6:24-26: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
Introduction: Today we gather to celebrate the birth of this precious boy and to bestow upon him a name, a name that holds meaning, purpose, and identity in God's eyes. Names in the Bible often carried great significance—they reflected the character, calling, or destiny of the individual. The name we give today carries with it a prayer and a hope for a life rooted in God’s blessings.
Main Points:
The Importance of a Name in God’s Plan
In the Bible, names often reflect God’s purpose for someone’s life. Think of Abraham, whose name means "father of many nations" or Jesus, meaning "the Lord saves." This baby’s name will be a reminder of God’s presence in his life. The name symbolizes the unique purpose that God has for this child.
Illustration: Share a story of a biblical figure whose name had special significance (e.g., Samuel, meaning "heard by God" because of Hannah's prayer).
Children as a Gift and Responsibility
Psalm 127:3 says, "Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him." This child is a blessing, but also a sacred trust. Parents are called to raise their children in the knowledge of the Lord. The name given to this boy should always be spoken with prayer, knowing that he is a gift from God, entrusted to you.
The Blessing of God Over This Child
In the book of Numbers, God instructs Moses to bless the people of Israel. Today, we declare a blessing over this child: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you..." The blessing is not just for the child, but for the parents too. God is watching over you as you guide him through life.
Application: Encourage the parents and the congregation to pray continually for the child’s growth and spiritual development, committing his life into God's hands.
Conclusion: Today’s ceremony is not just about giving a name; it’s about speaking God’s purpose into this child’s life. His name will be a constant reminder that he is known and loved by God. Let us all take part in helping this child grow in faith, love, and wisdom.
