Welcome to Vertical Church
Acts 2:42 (LSB)
And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.
As a church we seek to uphold the values of the NT church as seen in Acts 2:42 -
We are Trinitarian - while God is one in essence, He is three in person: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit
We believe in the sovereignty of God - sovereign over all creation, sovereign over the affairs of men, sovereign over salvation
We believe in the authority of the Bible - Scripture alone is the Word of God
We are Biblical in our theology - we are a bible teaching church
We believe that the Church is not a building or a denomination but a people - those who are truly in Christ and embrace the truths that were embraced and confessed by the New Testament Church, the apostolic church.
We are evangelical - we believe that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
We are a Vertical Church - we believe that all true worship and living is Vertical, God directed and for the glory of God alone.
Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone, For the glory of God alone - join us on Sundays
Call to Worship - Psalm 8
Psalm 8 (LSB)
For the choir director. According to the Gittith. A Psalm of David. 1 O Yahweh, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who displays Your splendor above the heavens! 2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have established strength Because of Your adversaries, To make the enemy and the revengeful cease. 3 When I see Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have established;
4 What is man that You remember him, And the son of man that You care for him? 5 Yet You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7 All sheep and oxen, And also the animals of the field, 8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 O Yahweh, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
Introduction:
A basic understanding of the Bible
The revelation of God - God revealing His person, his character, his power, his sovereignty, his love, his justice, his mercy, his grace
God instructing, God correcting
God using the revealing of his will through commandments, God using the stories of real people to show the blessings obedience and the pain of disobedience
God using poetry and songs and parables to teach spiritual lessons
God using prophecy to reassure those who are suffering and to warn those who are the source of suffering.
This is is the Bible
All of the Bible is doctrine, all of the Bible is theology.
Therefore, we must look at all of life through the lens of theology
As we look at today’s passage we have to keep several principles in mind:
It’s not just a story - it’s history
It’s not just luck or coincidence - it’s the divine plan of a sovereign God
It’s not just information: it’s told to produce transformation
It’s not about a person being the hero and saving the day: it’s about our God who is the hero and is the savior of those who come to him in faith
Scripture Reading - Exodus 2
Exodus 2 (LSB)
1 And a man from the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as a wife. 2 And the woman conceived and bore a son; and she saw that he was beautiful, so she hid him for three months. 3 But she could not hide him any longer. So she took for him an ark of papyrus reeds and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and put it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. 4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her young women walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the ark among the reeds and sent her maidservant, and she took it to her.
6 Then she opened it and saw the child. And behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she named him Moses and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
11 Now it happened in those days, that Moses had grown up. And he went out to his brothers and looked on their hard labors. And he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers. 12 So he turned this way and that, and he saw that there was no one around. So he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 Then he went out the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were struggling with each other; and he said to the wicked one, “Why are you striking your companion?” 14 But he said, “Who made you a ruler or a judge over us? Are you intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.” 15 And Pharaoh heard of this matter, so he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.
16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to give water to their father’s flock to drink. 17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses rose up and saved them and gave water to their flock to drink. 18 Then they came to Reuel their father, and he said, “Why have you come back so soon today?” 19 So they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he actually even drew the water for us and gave water to the flock to drink.” 20 And he said to his daughters, “Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the man behind? Call him so that he may eat bread.”
21 And Moses was willing to settle down with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses. 22 Then she gave birth to a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.” 23 Now it happened in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the slavery, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their slavery rose up to God. 24 So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 And God saw the sons of Israel, and God knew them.
The history of Moses in one chapter
Hebrews 11:23–27 LSB
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 regarding the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the rage of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen.
Sovereignty is a word that denotes power, control, faithfulness, and the ability to fulfill a predetermined plan

(2) Our Restoration from Loss (6-10)

What are the implications of this chapter?
When we do it our way, when we lack the patience to wait and trust, when we do it in our own strength, when we think there is no hope, when we think God has forgotten us
Don’t ever gt caught up in just the story, get caught up in the theology
Let’s pray
The Lord is faithful who will strengthen you and keep you from the evil one. Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love God has for you and into the steadfastness Christ gives you.
