The Rock of Our Salvation
The Rock of Our Salvation
Bible Passage: Psalm 62:1-12
Bible Passage: Psalm 62:1-12
Summary: Psalm 62 is a powerful declaration of trust in God amidst trials and opposition, emphasizing that He alone is our rock and salvation.
Now Just a moment ago I read an excerpt from Psalm 62. This Psalm is a declaration of our trust in God no matter the difficulty we are facing. No doubt today we are facing a very difficult thing. Saying goodbye to a loved one, Miss Lila. So today I want to give you hope during your hardship
1. Reliance on the Eternal Rock
1. Reliance on the Eternal Rock
I am at rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will never be shaken.
In Times of trouble the Psalmist would remind himself of the character and nature of God. This Psalm reminds us that even when we feel shaken, God is not. We can put our full confidence in him that through Christ he will sustain us in the trials of life and save us eternally in death.
But even in this precious promise there will be times of grief as we remember the life Lila lived. There will be times when the silence of her absence will overtake you. The grief will seem to hard to bear.
2. Silent Trust, Steadfast Rock
2. Silent Trust, Steadfast Rock
In Psalm 62:5-8 we see that the Psalmist David repeats himself. Listen to these words.
Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken.
My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God.
Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before him. God is our refuge. Selah
Why would the Psalmist repeat himself. Because it is normal in
the course of death for grief to come and grief to go. But in those quiet moments when no one is around to give us comfort or those times when no one see the tears we shed. The Lord does. Not only does he remind us that he is a rock that can handle all of our times of trouble. He is also a God in which we can pour out our hearts to him even in our darkest moments.
Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before him. God is our refuge. Selah
When we wait for God he will always show up.
Lastly, the Psalmist reminds us of the fleeting nature of human strength and life
3. Eternal Strength, Solid Foundation
3. Eternal Strength, Solid Foundation
Common people are only a vapor; important people, an illusion. Together on a scale, they weigh less than a vapor.
Place no trust in oppression or false hope in robbery. If wealth increases, don’t set your heart on it.
God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: strength belongs to God,
and faithful love belongs to you, Lord. For you repay each according to his works.
The Psalmist reminds us that there is only one sure hope in life. He reminds us that nothing else can save us . Nothing else can sustain us in life and in death. It is only through his strength that we can be saved.
In fact the N.T. puts it this way.
he saved us—not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy—through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
He poured out his Spirit on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior
so that, having been justified by his grace, we may become heirs with the hope of eternal life.
The scripture is clear that all those who turn in repentance and put their faith in Jesus Christ have this eternal hope. It is my knowledge that miss Lila had built her life around the hope of the gospel. In this we have the eternal hope that we will see her again.
After this final song we will close this service in prayer.
