Day One
Day One
Cardinal Numbers are one two three Ordinal numbers are first second third
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Light or daytime begins then Darkness comes which is night. Day ONE not the first day… it is the first day but it’s only one day because it’s the only day that has ever been. God saw all of it and it was Good it was tov. erev and boker evening and morning day one
Second Day
Second Day
And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
On the second day - yes it’s the ordinal number here - the second day we get heaven or sky. The word for water in Hebrew is mayim the word for sky/heaven is shamayim. The play on words here makes a bit more sense in the original language. erev and boker the second day. Wait what didn’t happen on the second day? God didn’t say he saw it and it was good. And now we have a Biblical reason for why Monday’s are the worst.
Third Day
Third Day
And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
The word for Earth eretz doesn’t have to mean earth in the way we think of it. It could just be land which is the most common way it’s translated. (dry ground/land is bashaw) The waters got together and became seas/lakes/oceans. God saw it was good
And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
We get all the vegetation here. It is really the first thing we’d now consider as life to exist. Notice something here, did God make the seed that he planted to grow up into a tree that would bear fruit or did he make a tree that would bear fruit in which it’s seed was? If you looked at a 5 minute old tree here on the third day how old would it look? Years old at the least. God created fully matured things or at least that’s how it seems when you just plainly read it.
God saw that it was good erev and boker the third day.
Recap:
Day One: day/night
Second: sky and water separated
Third: dry land and seas - good - vegetation - good
Fourth Day
Fourth Day
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
Here God adds stars and the Sun, and the Moon. It’s purpose is also given separating day from night and for signs and seasons. A sign here is the same sign word used when God tells Moses to use the staff that turns into a snake as a sign. It’s for showing a supernatural event. The second most common usage of the word is that of a signal. It’s the word for mark in the story of Cain and Abel. An actual sign was put on him so no one would attack him.
So God saw that it was tov - good, erev and boker the fourth day.
Fifth Day
Fifth Day
And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
Now God fills the waters and the sky with life and sees it and it is good. They’re told to be fruitful and multiply. Erev and boker the fifth day
Sixth Day
Sixth Day
And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
Now like the last day was for sky and sea Friday is God creating life to fill the land and saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
God does a different kind of creation and it’s called out here as a creation in the likeness of God. This portion is why we can claim that every life is valuable. No matter how downtrodden, how broken, how failed, or unwanted that person is by everyone else. They were made in the image of God, and that requires our respect and love. That’s an easy challenge until you remember I said EVERYONE has been made in the image of God. His job is eternal Judgment, ours is love. Even if love is a correction they don’t like, it’s a love that takes people from pride or desolation, from pre-eminence or destitution, from prosperity or despair to the humility in front of the cross before Christ who died not for their being not good enough but for our sin that condemns us all.
Okay what else do we see? A plural God here is speaking to himself, not to angels or some other random bystanders. He also puts Man in charge of all the earth.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
The Seventh Day
The Seventh Day
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
A story
A story
On vacation - recap the story of long vacation - water pump died - saw the “Cars” town went to Grand canyon and camped, went to the redwood forest and camped - had a wonderful time but by the end of the trip I had to have the water pump replaced and I replaced 7 of the 8 spark plugs and coil packs. Now, the spark plugs were a burden. Plugs and coils are kind of expensive and I didn’t have to pay for any labor because I did the work myself. I was in the parking lot of O’reiley’s with a borrowed set of their tools and a lot of heat give details about just getting it done quick by myself. Later when Konnor was helping me change spark plugs Jaime and the rest of the boys took a walk across the road to Walmart so they could walk around in the AC. Then I’m fixing the truck and the autozone didn’t actually have all the right tools and I kept having to go back in and see if they had a plug socket or better extension somewhere else on the loaner cart. We did all make it home though, and I think that eighth plug/coil still never had to be replaced.
Anyone notice anything interesting about that story?
I told the story a bit out of chronological order only because I wanted to emphasize the struggle I had with the car.
