As Iron Sharpens Iron

If I where to give you my knife and this sharpener what would you do with it? knives our dull, that is just the nature of it. If you have a knife it needs to be sharpened. Even the most expensive knives need to be sharpened. Sharpeners are made using metal products to cut the right angle into a blade to make it be able to cut things. I have learned that having sharp knives is important. Although there is a nice scar on my leg that taught me that I need to be careful with sharp knives. Try dressing a deer with dull knives, it is not that much fun.
The bible gives us advice using this metaphor. we are to grow together if you are a follower of Jesus. Prov 27:17
17 Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another.
We have a mixed age range of people here and this is something that has been on my heart for a while. How is this supposed to look and what does this mean. It is a challenge that I want to leave you guys with.
We have an example of what this looks like in 2 Timothy 1:5-7
5 I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and now, I am convinced, is in you also. 6 Therefore, I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
Timothy was a young man that Was raised to be a follower of Jesus by his mom, who was raised to be a follower of Jesus by her grandma. A family of faith. What this shows us is that we are to be a people that works together to help grow closer to God.
Let me tell you another story. A number of years ago I heard a panel of youth pastors talk about the needs of youth at the time. One of the things that He was doing that worked for them is partnered the youth with older mature adults. If one of the youth wanted to learn how to be a mechanic, or enjoyed learning about cars, He would partner them with a adult who knew how to work on vehicles. So they could learn together over a shared interest and talk about God in the process.
This is a Challenge I want to make to you guys. young and old. For those that are not a part of our church, what we value highly is growing together in our faith. We use a term called discipleship for this, which means that we will help each other grow closer to God. For those of you that have given your lives to Jesus, I leave you with a challenge, How are we sharpening one another?
You young people, learn from what the bible says, learn from how Timothy was raised. Yes listen to and learn from your parents but find a mature adult in the church to mentor you. The idea is you can not do this on your own, you where never meant to.
Old people, and I count my self as one of you. Be open with the youth, tell them what you have struggled through. relate to them and help them grow, we need each other.
Those that do not know Jesus, we are going to be learning more about Him this year at youth group so I challenge you to come out on Friday nights and have fun and learn more about Him. If you want to dig a little deeper then come out Wednesday nights to our family night where we will help you dig deeper in the word of God.
