DECLARATION:
Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Our church family is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit, and we are missionaries.

INTRODUCTION:
Great time a FLC 2024!
Paul & Teresa Masters
Review: wk. 3 - The H.S.’s role in this limited OT scope prompted Joel to prophesy around 825 BC that the Christian messianic age would be distinctly different in that God will pour out [His] Spirit on all people
WHY?…
TODAY: The Promised Holy Spirit
Opening Scripture:
Luke 24 Background: Luke 1-2 is HOPE for the fulfillment of God’s promises; Luke 24 God’s promises are being fulfilled in Jesus and we HOPE for the promise of being CLOTHED w/ power.
Luke 24 - Testimony of Jesus’ Resurrection:
a. The testimony of the empty tomb (23:50–24:12 - Peter saw)
b. The testimony of Jesus’ physical appearances (24:13–43 - Road to Emmaus)
c. The testimony of Jesus’ word (24:6–8, 25–27 [44])
d. The testimony of Scripture (24:27 [44–46])
e. The “inner” testimony of illumination (24:16, 31–32 [45])
Luke 24:36–45 “As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,”
Luke 24:46–50 “and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.”
And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Cf. Luke 1:72 “to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant,”
Background: John the baptizer’s father Zechariah prophesying about John at his birth

CLOTHED:
In Genesis God clothed Adam and Eve after their sin
Genesis 3:21 “And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.”
In Moses Law the priests were instructed to wear special clothing
Exodus 28:2 “And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.”
POWER:
In Acts The Kingdom is promised to arrive IN POWER (Acts 1:3-8; 15:9).
Luke’s Spirit Baptism is often described as “charismatic” (i.e. divine empowerment) while Paul’s is mostly soteriological (i.e. being in Christ)
For Luke Spirit baptism is a sort of “God intoxication” (Acts 2:13; Eph. 5:18), which is an “experience of self-transcendence motivated by the love of God” (Macchia, p. 14).
ICPBBC: In Luke-Acts, “power” is often expressed in healings and exorcisms (Luke 4:36; 5:17; 6:19; 8:46; 9:1; Acts 3:12; 4:7; 6:8; 10:38), which can be construed as signs of the kingdom era (Is 35:5–6 in Luke 7:22).
Luke 24:51–53 “While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.”
TRANSITION: Promise was made for the ministry of Jesus to continue in his physical absence

Replacing Judas Acts 1:15-26
Replacing Judas Acts 1:15-26
Acts 1:26 “And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”
Often when waiting we come up with something to do.
Many argue Paul was God’s pick to replace Judas
POINT: God’s power comes in the midst of out own working out of God’s plan
Style itself won’t limit God’s power
Trust God and be faithful as we wait
Conclusion/Reflection:
The Promise of God’s Power for us is that God’s power can turn casual interactions into meaningful ministry moments.
There was a group of friends who gathered at a pizza place every week.
One day, they invited a new guy from their circle. As they enjoyed pizza, they found out he was dealing with grief.
Rather than just making small talk, they shared their own stories of loss and faith.
By the end of the night, he felt uplifted and encouraged, realizing that communion over a meal could be a profound ministry.
How can we invite the Holy Spirit to empower our interactions with others?
Talk It Over
Why is the promise of power significant for the disciples after Jesus' ascension?
In what ways can we be empowered to act as missionaries in our everyday lives?
