The Pharisees design a clever trap, but Jesus’ cleverness is shown in his design of marriage from the beginning.
Marriage and divorce have always been surrounded by controversy. The Pharisees try to throw Jesus into their argument.
Divorce for defilement of the marriage
vs. divorce for anything displeasing
The problem is trying to understand marriage according to its failures and not according to its designer. The Pharisees were arguing about the best worst case scenario, not the best that God had made for man.
It was also Moses who wrote about God’s design of marriage in paradise. It was only the hardness of people’s hearts that ever made divorce a reality.
Instead, looking at the designer through the design we see a God that is not hard hearted but has made the wonderful estate of marriage as the ideal condition for a man and a woman to live together in security, prosperity and contentment.
It is also the ideal place for children for health and happiness and faith.
In these is the kingdom of God shown. Not in hardness of heart but in trust and faith.
