Hebrews 2:1–4 (NIV)

1 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Pay careful attention, why? So we don’t drift away

What happens when we drift away? Loose sight of God and His grace, become consumed by this world and Satan’s lies…fall into sinful ways

If we ignore so great a salvation…we cannot escape judgement

Message: Meditate on the Gospel…The Good News of our salvation in Christ Jesus.

Three Blessings of the Gospel:

Grace for our Past (2 Timothy 1:9)

Hope for our Future (2 Timothy 1:8-12)

Power for our Present (2 Timothy 1:8)

Grace for our Past - God’s grace is the basis for our salvation.

2 Timothy 1:9 NIV

9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

Grace can be defined as “unmerited favor”…we are not and can not become; moral enough, nice enough, or gifted enough to earn God’s favor…His grace is not something we can earn

Bishop William Temple once said, “The only thing of my very own which I contribute to redemption is the sin from which I need to be redeemed.” p.42

Do you ever reflect on your past and imagine your sins are too dark, to severe for God to forgive and forget? They are…and He still does…no just forgive, completely wipes away as if they never existed. We remember…consequences for our sins…He doesn’t.

God decided before the beginning of time…from eternity past He decided to trade the life of His perfect Son for a bunch of imperfect wretches.

With forethought, out of love, he wanted us and chose us

Hope for our Future - Every human being shares at least one thing in common…we will all die.

2 Timothy 1:9–10 NIV

9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

In our future is death.

The scoreboard is even more lopsided than Friday night’s Centralia Panthers game. Death 100 Billion/Humanity 0

Every resurrection from the Bible resulted in another death later down the road. Lazarus, widow’s son, etc.

1 Corinthians 15:20–23 (NIV)

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.

Transition: So, we are blessed with the Amazing Grace for our past and a Hope for our Future, where does that leave us for today? In the here and now part of life?

Power for the Present - The Holy Spirit gives us power to endure all of our present suffering.

How? Trusting God to get us through

2 Timothy 1:12 (NIV)

12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.

Paul’s List

When he was shipwrecked, God’s power rescued him.

When he was stoned, God’s power raised him back up.

When he was imprisoned, God’s power sustained him.

When he was targeted by assassins, God’s power protected him.

When he was physically weak, God’s power carried him.

Where, O death, is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
