I thought we were saved by grace and not by works?

Amen!

We are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

Indeed No one will be justified by works of the Law and All who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them (Romans 3:20, Galatians 3:10).

The only way to be saved is by faith in Christ who obeyed the Law and kept all the righteous requirements of the Law on our behalf and bore the penalty of the Law our sins deserved.

Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.”

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law because all our sins were laid on Him and He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree (1 Peter 2:24) and we are saved by grace through faith in Him.
