Sometimes when we think of serving in the church they think of the public service.
Preaching, teaching, worship, small group leaders. We see same gifts and think this is how we serve.
If we listen to the instruction of Scripture we must remember that our talents are not of our own making, but free gifts of God.
John Calvin (French Reformer)
It honestly does not matter what the talent or gifting is. The church, as a whole, has need of every gift and talent.
Dustin Dorman reminded me the last time I tried to fix my truck,
I don’t try to preach a sermon, so why are you doing my job?
Every gift and function is needed.
An article in the Scientific American talks about the Appendix and says,
the appendix, once regarded as a nonfunctional tissue, is now regarded as an important 'back-up' that can be used in a variety of reconstructive surgical techniques. It is no longer routinely removed and discarded if it is healthy.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-is-the-function-of-the-human-appendix-did-it-once-have-a-purpose-that-has-since-been-lost/
Can we life without the appendix? Yes, but it is better to have it than not especially in young adults.

All gifts are needed

Exodus 35:30-31
God gives His Spirit for the design of the tabernacle items. Numbers 4:5 Levites packed the tabernacle. Numbers 4:24 Some moved the tabernacle. Mark 5:38 People would mourn with others. Not commanded but useful. Acts 6:1-7 People served those in need in various ways. Including distributing food.
Romans 12:15
Mourning and rejoining with those in need.
The church and this is beyond just Journey only functions, only reaches people, only goes into the darkness when the body functions.
We all have a job to do and every job is important. The work that is done from the greeters, the coffee bar, the welcome booth, safety, lights, sound, check-in, students, prep, kids, and so much more is what makes the church the church. It is everyone doing their part. Charles comes and mows the lawn every week. It is what helps people feel like this place is kept up.
I am so beyond honored to serve with a group of people that understand this.
I hear time and time again from people that this is their church and that shows.
A while back the AC stopped working in the student room. Two guys jumped into action and took care of the whole issue. What was wrong? I have no idea. But they knew what was wrong and they fixed it.
1 Peter 2:4–5 CSB
As you come to him, a living stone—rejected by people but chosen and honored by God— you yourselves, as living stones, a spiritual house, are being built to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
I want to give us a Texas translation of this verse.
When all y’all come together in the living stone that is Jesus. All y’all become the holy house of God.
It is together that we rise or fall. It is together that we make this happen. When someone comes here and finds community. When someone comes here and finds Jesus and gives their life to Him, it is a victory in every single area. We all rejoice because together we made that happen.
Most of our church serves somewhere because we all get it. Together we rise.
