Today we will be going through John which is known as the last of the 4 gospels, The first 4 books of the new testament John was likely the last of the 4 written so he would have likely known what the first 3 wrote about and gives us a different insight into Jesus’s personality. Each person who wrote a gospel either knew Jesus personally or Luke is believed to not know Jesus but interviewed people who did. What dose Gospel Mean? Good news
Matthew shows that Jesus is the mesiah of the old testament primarily written for the jews
Mark shows us that Jesus was a servant, who wrote to the gentiles
Luke shows us that Jesus was perfect man. writing to sinners women and children
John shows us Jesus came from heaven demonstrating that Jesus is God. Johns intention was to write for everyone
They all tell stories of Jesus minsitry Matthew mark and luke are known as the syhnoptic gosepels which mean see together so they focus more on what he taight and did some things that those three books have that John dose not are
Jesus’s birth
Jesus baptism
jesus temtation in wilderness
Jesus teaching of parables
The last supper
The ascension
but John is known to be the one that tells us the most about what Jesus was like. Johns book is written for a specific purpose
We read in John 20 31
John 20:31 ESV
but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Read V 1-5
So we see that in the beginning there was the word, before creation was the word. John uses the same word God from genesis that would read elohim which is used to speak of three of more no doubt referring to the trinity. The Word also means logos
But nonetheless we see this distinction between the word as God and with God
God created everything
V4 In him was life. So would that mean for those who are not in him? Death in this life and the next
V5That life was the light of men, if you are here today and there is darkness in your life. That with christ in your life it will not overcome you.
V6-8Then we are told about this man named John also known as John the baptist. Not to get confused with the author of this book, He was essentially sent to pave the way or set up for Jesus to begin his ministry here on earth.
Johns whole purpose was to witness about the light, so that people would believe
Is a witness neutral ?
No in order to be a witness you have to take a position . why is it important that we witness about our faith in Christ?
V9 the light is for everyone, not in the sense that everyone will accept the light but that each life come from Christ
V10 Why is it important that our savior came into the world.
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
