VERSE TO HEART
Joel 2:12–13 (NLT)
12 That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. 13 Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.
TIMELINE
Joel becomes a prophet
835-825 BC
The reign of King Joash’s youth. (2 Kings 12:1-12)
Joash’s murderous grandmother, Athaliah was the daughter of the infamous Israelite pair, King Ahab and Jezebel. Athaliah married King Joram, son of Judah’s King Jehoshaphat.
The Queen Mother Athaliah decided to get rid of the entire royal line and take the crown herself. She slaughtered all the royal heirs, or so she thought.
While the power-seeking Athaliah was in the act of killing her own grandsons, Jehosheba, half-sister of Ahaziah, stole the orphaned Joash and hid him and his nurse in a bedroom. It was a courageous act for which she risked her life and the lives of all those connected with her. It was also how God worked in mysterious ways to preserve David’s throne.
When the right time came in Joash’s seventh year, Jehoida initiated a well-thought-through coup. Captains and their soldiers, guards, and runners provided security.
They formed a ring all around the young king Joash and put the royal crown on him. They gave him the copy of the law which was to remain a guide for him as ruler, clapped their hands, and shouted, “Long live the king!”
When Athaliah heard the ruckus and saw the king standing by a pillar in the temple, she cried out, “Treason! Treason!” Officers of the army took her away and killed her. The people rejoiced to have their legitimate king take the throne.
Joel breaks the mold of priesthood traditions
His prophetic Word made the access to God that Priests were a custom to common to all.
Experiencing God’s favor first impacted Judah and the priestly order established by Aaron.
Society had roles and a sense of Order that Joel was prophesying that God would ignore or move around.
The value of
old vs young
sons vs daughters
first born was celebrated over the other siblings
free vs slaves
priests vs others
Peter refers to Joel’s Prophecy
Acts 2:16–18 NLT
16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy.
Acts 2:21 NLT
21 But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOU AND FOR ME
HE WANTS US TO RECEIVE OF HIM AND HIS GOODNESS.
THERE ARE ACTIONS...
Turn to me
Give your hearts to me
Come w/ fasting, weeping, and mourning
Tear your heart
Return to the Lord

Return to the LORD your God,

for he is merciful and compassionate,

slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

He is eager to relent and not punish.

2 Corinthians 10:5 TPT
5 We can demolish every deceptive fantasy that opposes God and break through every arrogant attitude that is raised up in defiance of the true knowledge of God. We capture, like prisoners of war, every thought and insist that it bow in obedience to the Anointed One.
WE WANT GOD TO DESTROY THE ENEMY, BUT HE HAS GIVEN US— YOU AND ME THE POWER...
Proverbs 4:23 NLT
23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
Proverbs 4:23 TPT
23 So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life.
YOU HAVE THE POWER TO GUARD THE PASSIONS OF YOUR HEART!
We do this not as a Good and Bad list
Saying, I have done this God
We do it, b/c it helps us.
God loves you
Sent Jesus to die for you
Now, LET’S SERVE HIM WITH OUR WHOLE HEART!!
GOD IS PRODUCED IN YOU LIKE FRUIT ON A TREE WHEN WE SERVE HIM, GUARD OUR PASSIONS, AND CAPTURE IMAGINATIONS THAT OPPOSE GOD.
Galatians 5:22–23 (TPT)
22 But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions:
joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit. Never set the law above these qualities, for they are meant to be limitless.
CLOSING
What is our response?
REMEMBER THE ACTIONS...
