Our reality is often determined by the state of our relationships, so when the most important relationship became twisted, we entered a distorted reality.

Intro

This is a story we’re all familiar with, however, when we look closer at the story we learn about how sin enters our hearts.
Genesis 3:1–8 (NIV)
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Why is it called “The Fall”?

Genesis 3:1 “1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?””
Let’s see what God really said: Genesis 2:16-17 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.
The quote is similar but the slight difference is enough to instill doubt in Eve’s mind. How? By giving her the notion that we can question the commands of God.
Genesis 3:2–3 NIV
The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
I’m not one to judge because getting things exactly right is hard. But just because it’s hard to remember God’s words exactly doesn't mean we shouldn't try. In fact we should be study the Bible even more because misremembering God’s words can lead to sinful consequences.
Eve was right that God didn’t say you can’t eat from any tree. But she adds that God also said you can't touch it.
It seems like a minor addition. What harm could it bring? If anything Eve made God’s command more strict - so shouldn’t it not be a big deal?
Of course, if the world was a safe place we would be okay. But see what Eph. 6:12 tells us.
Ephesians 6:12 NIV
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
We’re not on a neutral playing field. Satan is looking for ways to trip us up and when we misquote God, it leaves an opening for the devil to attack.

Fall Into Depravity

Genesis 3:4–5 NIV
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
To be like God is good, but it must be on His terms. When we seek God’s power without His goodness, character, and wisdom, we become an agent of destruction.
God has no rival or equal, and we
Philippians 2:6-11 "Though he was in the form of God, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men"
The effects of sin are impossible to fully understand, but it all stems from one major issue - sin separates us from God. When we think of the Fall, I want you to think of the term “depravity.”
Genesis 3:6–8 NIV
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Hebrews 4:15-16
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
