Last week we started out with Mary Magdalene at Jesus tomb weeping. She might not had fully figured out what was going on yet. May not of actually known who Jesus was at this time. I don't think that she did for several reasons.
She bent down to look inside. I think this was out of despair. I can’t believe He is gone[died]. I cant believe He is gone[ His body is know longer in the tomb]
She was not looking for anything divine or super natural. The angels were setting there one at the head the other at the feet of where the body once was and the asked her want was wrong and she said they have taken my Lord away . She was not fearful. We have talked about how most times in scripture people were fearful when the encounter angels, but she isn’t . We talked about last week how angels can appear as men. Lets say that is the case here. So what you would have is two men setting in an empty tomb. This was a dangerous time to be a follower of Jesus. Most people don't set around in empty tombs, but Mary still isn't scared.
Her concern is that the body is gone . Some of the other disciples might have taken the body ,bad people might have taken it. What Mary knows is the body is gone . AND SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHERE IT IS. She was also probably alone by now because she says my Lord and not our Lord
I think Mary was very distraught and heart broken. She believes Jesus to be her Lord but not in the same way she will in a few moments. We talked last week about Marys life before she met Jesus. It was’t good. She liked His teaching , He had pulled her out of a dark life, but she is still searching for a human being not deity. She still does not realize Jesus is the Messiah.
She turns around and sees Jesus and mistakes Him for the gardener. He ask why she is crying and she asked Him were the body was. Even with what Jesus had taught and the miracles Jesus had performed [that she had witnessed] she was not looking for a resurrected Jesus.
Jesus calls her name and now she recognizes it Him . We talked last week about the Shepard calling His sheep by name and them responding to Him. She says teacher . I still don't know that she is fully aware of what she is actually seeing.
She grabs on to Him and He says don't cling to me I have not yet acceded to my father and your father and your father. He had made the sacrifice for are sins, He had been raised from the dead but He still had work to do. He still had to return to heaven. To His place at the right had of the Father and intercede for us.
Then Jesus tells Mary to go tell His brethren that He is ascending to His father and God And there father and God. We talked about this being the first time Jesus calls them brother and He is telling them the are adopted in. He is a natural Son but we are an adoptive son. We still have the Fathers work to do . We to will be raised from the dead and ascend to Heaven. so Mary goes and tells them.
So here it is still Sunday the first day of the week and all the disciples but Thomas and others are all locked in a room scared and Jesus appears.
Jesus greets them with peace be with you. Then He showed them His Hands and side.
Then the disciples were glad to see Jesus.
Then Jesus tells them what there mission will be. To share the Gospel with the world. Then He breathed the Holy Spirit in to there nostrils. Just like God breathed life into Adam .Jesus breathed new life into the disciples.
He said go out and tell the world about salvation. Tell them about sin and the repentance from sin. Tell them about All that I have taught you, and I will send a helper to guide you.
Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
So here is Thomas called the twin. That is the meaning of the name . He was also called Dydimus in Greek which also means twin. There are later writings that called Him Judas Thomas. There are writings that say He was the twin of Jesus which we know He was not. I guess Him and Jesus might have resembled one another. The name Tony means “priceless one or highly praiseworthy” so I do believe there is something to this name business, but I think my Mom named me that because she liked the name.
There is tradition that says He might of carried the Gospel as far as India before he died.
He became definitely became a born again Christian that did great works for the Lord, but right now he was the follower of a man and His teachings. He was devoted to Jesus.
Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
At this point He is devoted to Jesus the man. Many are still devoted to Jesus the man today. They believe He was a great teacher are profit. I actually know a guy that goes to a church that teaches Christian values. All of that is good but it wont save you.
So the other disciples told Thomas about this. In the NKJ it says said to. The AMP says the others kept telling and that is from what I can see is the most accurate. It wasn’t like the just said “by the way while you were gone . They just wanted Him to understand what had taken place.
So here is doubting Thomas. Are maybe better described as unbelieving Thomas. He was doubting because he did eventually believe. If he would have died in his doubting , He would have died unsaved Thomas. I know God knew these men’s hearts and that is why He choose them but we are all chosen by God but you still have to put your faith in Him.
But before I get to hard on him he wasn't there . Jesus had not breathed the Holy Spirit in to Him . So he wanted proof.
And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
Eight days later the following Sunday. Coincidence? I think not. They were all gathered together including Thomas in a locked room. No doubt It was still hot news all over town that Jesus body had been stolen, and Jesus shows up.
I have know idea exactly what this would have looked like but for me. I'm setting in a locked room and all of a sudden Jesus appears. Just like my buddy's said He had before. I know longer would find a need to touch His wounds.
Jesus again says peace to you, then tells Thomas here are my wounds. Jesus didn,t give up on Thomas He gave him the proof He desired and said now do not be unbelieving but believe. Believe I am the resurrected Savior. Jesus didn't have to do this but the will of God was for none to perish. Jesus said He would loose none that the father Had given Him. So He gave Him what it took to believe. We don't get this now are salvation is by faith.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
That is the answer for all Christians. The Resurrection brought Thomas here. He did not only believe that Jesus was standing in front of Him . He knew Jesus had been raised from the dead. All that Jesus had taught Him and showed him was true. He now knows Jesus is deity. MY LORD AND MY GOD.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
He was God and all that He had said about being raised from the dead was true
For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day.”
It says Jesus is the Son of God
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory.
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Jesus is Lord and Christ. That belief . That Faith . Is how we are saved by Gods grace. nothing else.
What you believe is important. Its the only way to the father.
Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
This is awesome this is talking about us and our blessing 2000 years after this event took place.
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
We have internal life we have joy inexpressible and full of glory. We have peace. In are knowing in our faith that everything in Gods word is true . In His creation in His life in His death His assention and His return . When we believe God we have it all, but when you don't believe God you don't have any of it. If you have questions look for the answers. Have faith you will find them in God.
There is so many people out there that are not satisfied with what God has given them. It is almost like the have a need to manufacture an experience instead of seeing the blessings they all ready have.
I have been in those situations and they can’t compare to what I have found here. I know this is not the only place it can be found but its were I found it. Its Jesus. Its His word Its His communication with us.
It is worship from us to Him.
Its love of one another that we have Its community. Its a willingness to serve that isn't forced.
ITS JESUS ITS A BUILDING OF FAITH ITS KEEPING THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING.
you don't have to manufacture it It has already been made and We have little to do with it. Its God in us .
And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
So now John is telling us the reason for his Gospel. So that we can believe so we can know who Jesus is . So we can believe He is the Christ the savior of the world.
John tells us this is not all the things Jesus done
And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
John has defiantly told us who Jesus is.
The Son of God. God in the flesh
and through that knowledge. Through that faith . That belief that all that is written is true we have eternal life.
1peter1:3-9
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
