What does it mean to mortify?

Why are we told to put to death, something that we have already died to?

The old man has died.

The old man refuses to die.

He is like the Nasgul in the Lord of the rings. Neither living nor dead, something you cannot kill and yet must kill.

How do we mortify?

What is the nature of our war? Spiritual or fleshly?

1 Peter 2:11 ESV

Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 ESV

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

According to this verse how do we win the war against sin?

1. Live in light of who you are. The decisive victory of Christ on the cross means that he has already taken away the power of sin.

Like a war that is won, but there are still pockets of resistance.

2. Learn to use a sword.

If someone comes into your bed room to attack you what are you going to do? You are not going to grab its let and kn-awl it heel.

3. Don’t give opportunity for the flesh.

Romans 13:14 ESV

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
