Text: Gen. 14:3.
Intro: Last week the promises given to Abraham beginning in Gen. 12. We considered the place of sojourn, and specifically the place the Bible calls Hebron. I
Ur of Chaldees to Haran (Gen. 11:26-32)
Haran - Unto a land (Gen. 12:1-3)
Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh (Gen. 12:6-7) The Lord renews his covenant of the seed and this land.
Plain of Moreh to between Bethel, and Hai. (Gen. 12:8)
From Between Bethel, and Hai to Egypt. (Gen. 12:9-10)
Egypt to between Bethel, and Hai. (Gen. 13:1-3)
Strife between Abraham’s and Lot’s herdman, Abram has Lot chose… (Gen. 13:8-9)
Abraham removes himself again from between Bethel, and Hai, and dwelt in Hebron. (Gen. 13:18)
This becomes the place of Abraham’s sojourn. He goes to other places but Hebron is the place that becomes known as the dwelling place of Abraham.
Mamre -
Genesis 13:18 KJV 1900
Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord.
Where he was dwelling when one escapes and comes to tell Abram about Lot’s capture.
Genesis 14:13 KJV 1900
And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.
Abraham rescues Lot, and returns...
Genesis 14:16 KJV 1900
And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
Genesis 14:18–24 KJV 1900
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
Genesis 15:6 KJV 1900
And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
After Abram refuses the king of Sodom’s offer of possessions… God visits Abram again, and promises him an heir out of his own bowels, and then for the first time describes the land of possession.
Genesis 15:7 KJV 1900
And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
Genesis 15:18–21 KJV 1900
In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
Abraham was 75 years old when he answered God’s call the first time.
Genesis 12:4 KJV 1900
So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
85 years old Sarai gives Hagar to him, to bring forth a child.
Genesis 16:3 KJV 1900
And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
86 years old when Ishmael is born.
Genesis 16:16 KJV 1900
And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
From the moment of unbelief in Abram’s life, there are 13 years of silence… Then at 99 years of age, God visits Abram and assures him of the covenant.
Genesis 17:1–4 KJV 1900
And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
God again shows Him the covenant, and changes his name...
Genesis 17:5–8 KJV 1900
Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
God then does something He has never done before...
Genesis 17:15–19 KJV 1900
And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
He tell him when...
Genesis 17:21 KJV 1900
But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.
When God returns to Abraham and Sarah, they are 100 and 90 years old… Guess where they are?
Genesis 18:1 KJV 1900
And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
God reiterates His promise:
Genesis 18:9–15 KJV 1900
And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent. And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
Sodom and Gomorrah are going to be destroyed, Abraham is going to again go south because of a famine… This time to Gerar… Then… At 100 years of age… Abraham finally is given the promise! 25 years in the making!
Genesis 21:1–8 KJV 1900
And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age. And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.
Promise Delivered, at God’s appointed time!
Isaiah 41:8 KJV 1900
But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, The seed of Abraham my friend.
In Hebrew the name Hebron means: to unite or to be joined.
For over 1000 years now in Arabic, the name of the city has been called El Khalil which means “friend of God”
James 2:23 KJV 1900
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
