Luke 11:1-4

Prayer is essential to every Christians. It is the breath of believers. Some of us might pray long, and seems as we know how to put words together. Some of us might not know how to pray. You might ask some Christians and they would say that they don’t know how to pray. Do you talk to your father or mother? do you talk to other people? If you do then you can also talk to God. It does not have to be long. However, what we should know is that when we pray we do not pray to instruct God. Phil 4:6
Philippians 4:6 CSB
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
There’s a big difference between bringing our needs before the Father and instructing him.
And we do not Pray to impress God. Example Pharrisee Matt 6:5
Matthew 6:5 CSB
“Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.
We do not pray to inform God
God already know; nothing takes the FATHER BY SURPRISE
But we pray to invite God to direct us to his will.
Some of us might not know how to pray just like one of Jesus disciples. He might have seen Jesus prayed in several occasions. What is interesting here is that he did not ask Jesus to teach him how to preach or how to cast out Demons, instead he asked Jesus “Lord, teach us to pray as John also taught his disciple.”
One of the scholars says, Jesus prayers include adorations, praise of God and doxologies. And as we can see it in Luke 5:33
Luke 5:33 CSB
Then they said to him, “John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.”
John also taught his disciple to pray and John disciple often fast and pray- pettition and request. Prayer isn’t a new concept. We can also see it through the OT that people also pray. The disciple asked for the model because he want to make sure he pray the right thing and ask for the right thing.
1. First thing that we see here is that, Jesus said to him, “whenever you pray, say, Father,”
It is unusual for Jews to say this because the concept of Father is too personal relation. However, this should not be a strange concept. Prayer always begin with relationship. As we are the children of the Light, God is our father. And we have the right to call him father through Christ. Someone may ask, “Is God a man?” of course not! GOd is not a man; God is not a woman. GOd is Spirit. But God is Father. And when we call God Father, we are not talking about biology; we are talking about theology. All human fatherhood is patterned after the divine Fatherhood. Father is what God is. What we need to know is that being made in the image of God has nothing to do with physical characteristics. Like God, we have a mind, will, intellect, emotions, and moral capacity. The reason God reveal himself in Masculin form as father is to communicate truth about his nature to humanity also known as anthropomorphism.
2. Hollowed be your name- first petition.
God would be hollowed- to make holy. Name of GOd is honoured. The protecftion of the santify of the name of God comes at the beginning of the ten laws of Israel, “ You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”
The wolrd blasphemous God’s name daily. Jesus was aware of this great problem and said, “ when you pray let your first prayer be, “hollowed be your name.” Respect the name of God, your creator. Do not use his name in Vain. If you cuss, cut it off.
According to Jewish’s Rabbi, those who fail to mention the kingdom of God is not true prayer.
“Your kingdom come”
Luke 10:9 CSB
Heal the sick who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near you.’
Jesus repeated these words in the New Testament several times. And he mandate to his disciple before he departed the world , “you shall be my witness” we bear witness to the kingship of Chirst, that people in the world will bow down before him.
God owns the earth and reign over it. He has appointed Jesus as the king of the Earth.... kindgom exists, but the world still existes in rebellion against the appointed king.
Jesus said, “pray that that kindgom will be manifest of the earth as it is in heaven.” Only when you made those two petition, that GOd name would be holy and that GOd’s kingdom would be made visible, can you then bring to pray for your dailty need.
Your kingdom come is about the universal glorify so bring it.
3. “Give us each day our daily bread.”
Daily represent provision.
Provision: material and physical; Moral and spiritual; protection and direction.
Daily bread could be physial needs, spiritual needs or protection.
For physical bread: reamind me of Manna; daily- don’t worry about tomorrow.
and spiritual- nourish our soul with God’s word, so it could protect and direct us to God’s way.
4. “And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone in debt to us.”
this is has to do with our sin to God and others.
It is heart breaking that most Christians are so unloving and unforgiving.
As Matt 6:14-15
Matthew 6:14–15 CSB
“For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses.
Until we are willing to forgive others, we cannot expect God to forgive. and we can see what happned to the unforgiving servent in Matt 18:21-35
Matthew 18:21–35 (CSB)
We confess, God forgive us and not holding against us anymore. We are ought to do the same.
we live in this world temporary, we don’t know if we gona live or die tomorrow. We are strangers in this world, so don’t hold grudge on one another. we will be mad or sad because of other people actions, but dono’t hold grudge on anyone.
5. “Do not bring us into temptation”
this might sound like God leades us into temptation, but James 1:13-14
James 1:13–14 CSB
No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God,” since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone. But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire.
is clear. What we should know is that Temptation capable of different meaning in NT.
It comes from withing us
External tempation- devil tries to pursuade us
God’s tempt people- putting them into test ( like Adam and Eve)
This is evident in our daily life.
sometimes we want to do things because we want to do it
sometimes we do things because of the influence of others.
and soemtiems we do it because we are in the situation.
What is interesting about the Lord Prayer is that In the Book of Mattew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4 it doesn’t mention your kingdom, your power, and the glory
You don’t find those in the Bible, only it could be found in the King James Book. Although it is not wrong to glorify God, in the orginal textes, it doesn’t have those and that is something that we should be aware of it. Those who tranaslated the Bible used a short doxology to praise God at the end of the prayer.
So we know who our father is, we know his nature, soverginty, with that knowledge we ask for him to provide, forgive and lead us
That’s why when we pray we should always keep these in mind and our blue print.
And when we pray also keep in mind that we don’t pray to instruct God, Command him, or inform him. we pray to invite him into our lives so we can know his will and align our needs with his will.
always know that God gives you the will. When you chose the wrong thing, don’t say that it is God’s will. It is your will.
