We are here this afternoon to celebrate the life of Miss Patricia Wells. I hope that you will excuse me, but I can’t refer to her as that. To me she is nan. I was graced with the opportunity to come into this family roughly eight years ago and she has been my Nan ever since.
Her home was the gathering place, the first place I really met my wife’s extended family, the host of countless Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and other holiday celebrations. She welcomed my wife and I into her home to stay for months in the early years of our marriage. While she may not have been the most sentimental of persons, no one could say that she did not care.
There was one particular way in which she would express her care. Every now again, you’d be out and about, the phone would ring and it would be Nan on the other end. The conversation would almost always start the same way. With those three dangerous words, she would say, “I’ve been thinking.” You never knew what was going to come after that statement, but you could be rest assured she about to take you to task giving unsolicited advice about a problem going on your life. Whether it be life insurance policies, thoughts on the housing market, stocks, investing, or even the right way to bake a fish. True story.
While we didn’t always appreciate the phone calls in the moment, they are evidence of the care and concern she had for those around her. It was evidence that she was spending her time thinking about us, trying to craft real and practical advice for our good. And honestly, though our pride may have had us dismiss many of the calls, most of the time, she was right!
I am going to miss those phone calls.
In the spirit of Nan, I would like to extend to all those gathered today, family, friends, neighbors alike, those who care enough about Nan to be here today, I would like to extend one more, “I’ve been thinking…” to all of you on behalf of Nan.
Of all her proficiencies, Nan knew the truth of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. She had weighed the evidence, heard the preaching, listened to the apologist, and she knows whom she has believed in, and was certainly persuaded that He is able to keep that which she has commited unto Him until that day.
She is now enjoying the ultimate fruit of that faith, praising at this moment in presence of her Savior.
So if Nan could give us a call at this moment, she’d say, “I’ve been thinking and you really need to be sure that you know the reality of Jesus Christ.
I’ve been thinking and you need to know that your sin, every fault, every action you’ve taken that falls short of the glory of God, separates you from the Holy God.
I’ve been thinking and I want you to know that my faith in Christ was beautiful foretaste of what I now fully enjoy.
I’ve been thinking and I want you to know the same. It is simple, but it is not easy. You must understand you are sinner far from God, incapable of bringing yourself back to Him by your good works. You must see that Jesus did what you couldn’t do, lived how you couldn’t live, and died to pay cost the of your sins. Understanding what Christ did both as a historical fact and a life changing reality, brings us to repentance. Turning from our sin and to our God.
If any of this thinking has caused you to think about your own place before God, reach out today. Speak to me, one of these other pastors, a friend or family member you know loves the Lord Jesus Christ. You can leave here today knowing the truth, grace, and love of Jesus Christ that gives you peace, hope, joy, and love in times of despair. You can know the blessed assurance of having Christ as your Savior. You can know what Nan knew and then you can tell others who need to know what you’ve been thinking that is for their good and for God’s glory.
