For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
1 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness;
According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity
And cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.
4 Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is evil in Your sight,
So that You are justified when You speak
And blameless when You judge.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.
6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness,
Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.
9 Hide Your face from my sins
And blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners will be converted to You.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation;
Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
That my mouth may declare Your praise.
16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You are not pleased with burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
18 By Your favor do good to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices,
In burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.
Biting off more than you can chew.
Illustration snake eating a crocadile.
leads to the background of psalm 51. The aftermath of David’s affair with Bathsheba, and murdering her husband Uriah.
1st Intro -
Speak on the detox series. Operation Detox.
My name is Kerwin and I have sinned. (Have the church do it)
Intro after scripture:
Picture of a 13 foot Burmese Python and a 6 foot alligator
Picture shows the snake which has consumed the alligator. While consuming the 6 foot alligator it died in the process of digesting the gator.
The interesting fact here is the Everglade is a natural habitat for the Alligator, its not a natural living space for the 13 foot Burmese Python.
The burmese python was in a place where it did not belong, trying to digest something he shouldnt have. The snake died consuming something he shouldnt have and being in a place he shouldnt have been.
Shows us that you could die, being in some place you have no business being, and consuming things you have no business consuming.
While this Python was trying to enjoy what it consumed, once it got inside it killed him.
There are some pythons in this church. You have died on the inside because you consumed something you had no business consuming in a place you had no business being.
Psalms 51 shares the unfortunate affects of sin. That it feels good on the outside but fatal on inside.
Im only talking to the real folks. Those who are saved, santified, and fill with the holy spirit and REAL! There were times where you were faced with potiential death because you consumed what you had no business consuming. Because you were in a place you had no business being.
The bible scholors call this pslam “The Psalm of a Sick Person” that was brought about because of sin.
This is the aftermath of Davids affair with Bathsheba. (Tell the story) You are that man. 2 Sam 12:1–15
We have to be careful. Just because you are saved, and been saved for a while, sin is crouching at your door waiting to pounce. We are talking about David who was in the pasture yet choosen, choosen by God to be King of Isreal. David who brought Giants down to size. David who wouldnt touch gods annoited, yet sin was crouching. David who lead wars and overcame attacks from without and within his own quarters sin was crouching. Yet it took one day off from doing what he was called to do, to something he had no business doing. Called out for sleeping with another mans wife, then tried to cover it up, and ended up killing uriah, bathesheba husband. David was exposed, David went to God.
My Problems Are Ever Before Me
3 For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.
My sins are ever before me. It’s in my face. Its on my mind.
David's awareness of his sin wasn't just in his mind; it affected every part of him—emotionally, spiritually, and even physically. Psalm 32:3-4 echoes this when David says, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me.”
He couldn’t escape the reality of his actions.
Reminds me of Carolyn Bryant Donham - the woman who accused Emmett Till of harrassment in 1955. And in 2008 recanted her story.
6 decades she was silent
6 decades let the world believe a lie
6 decades of questions gone unanswered.
at the age of 88 she recants her statment. The reality of what she done never left her thoughts, her dreams, the guilt she must have felt watching that young man and his family suffer. You wont outlive your bad choices. you wont outlast them.
Since we have agreed that we are on a road to recovery we must admit we have a sin problem.
Notice the langauge David uses. He didnt deny or hide from the fact that he sin. But he recognized what he needed. Wash me, cleanse me, blot out my all my inquities.
Sin is portrayed as detrimental in several ways according to the articles.
its a price you cant pay
it affects your nature
likend to be locked in jail (tends to keep you longer than you were willing to stay)
easy to start it, impossible to stop
creates tension in your relationship with God.
Your problem are worse than it seems. Your sins can really do damage worse than you think.
You wont outlive your bad choices. you wont outlast them. But you can overcome. watch it. i believen i some cases 2 things can be right.
A parent can be both firm with their child's discipline while also being loving and supportive.
i proud to be black while at the same time voicing the shortcomings we have as a people.
My Purifier Is Ever Before Me
Psalms 51:10-12
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit.
I know this because David didnt die because from this. Had time to write a poem.
Create - means to create from nothing. men invent. Only god took nothing from nothing and created the world we see today.
So David says i ruined this. I have nothing you can start from. Create in me a clean heart and renew. David is asking for a miracle. Seem like we were all in line for a miracle. This was something only God could do. This is something only god can fix.
The sins david committed Death was the only judgment. there was nothing in place, no goats could be killed, no lamb cook be cooked, no money could be given. the only option was death.
One of the changes I have noticed in our modern world is the use of purifiers. Due to sickness, covid. It removes Dust, allergens, mold, pet dander, bacteria, viruses, smoke, and odors
We have air purifiers to filter out the impurities in the air we breathe.
I would like a purifier for my brain. Something that would filter out all the rubbish that I no longer need to focus on because it has been dealt with.
I need someone to be a purifier of my consciousness.
I was reading Hebrews 1:3 the other day
He [Jesus] made purification for sins. Hebrews 1:3
Jesus has cleaned up my mess. It’s been purified. The mess, even from a distracted loss of focus tomorrow, has already been sorted too.
It doesn’t take away the consequences of being a fragile human being in broken messed up world, but it gives us the freedom to not have to focus on the failures as a life sentence where we have to go around like a leper in Biblical times shouting ‘unclean unclean’ Leviticus 13:45.
That’s not who you are.
You are clean.
A purifier stands before and says ‘You are clean’
While David’s sin was ever before him, so was God’s grace, mercy, and purification. God is the only one who can cleanse and restore what sin has corrupted. David’s cry for cleansing and renewal points to God as the ultimate Purifier, always ready to wash us clean when we turn to Him in repentance.
We have something that the great saints of old didnt have. We have an Internal purifying system.Ot testamnet HS would show up do a task and leave once the task was done. But for the NT saints. The Holy spirit resides on the inside of the believer today. When i tell you we got it good. Its actually better than we think. Its a constant renewal.
What the ministry of the purfier
Draws in air, passes it through a filter, and returns clean air
draws in dirt - passes it through a filter , and only the clean comes out.
its a continuoes process - its unseen but effective - it prevents future contamanation. you just dont know how good you got it.
What you done was bad, but what you have is greater.
even though we are not worthy, even though it seem like our failures should have disquafied. Look was David says in
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners will be converted to You.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation;
Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
That my mouth may declare Your praise.
16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You are not pleased with burnt offering.
My Purpose is Ever Before Me -
Reminded of this story -
Grandma who would have 2 buckets. 1 with no holes and one full of holes.
Grandma would always give the little boy the bucket with holes.
and while they walk accross the field the little boy would get upset. because everytime they get to the other side the little would have no water in his bucket.
Finally the little boy had enough, Grandma why i always have the bucket with the holes in it. Seem like im not being productive. You have more water every time and i have nothing. How can i help you. Seem like im not doing nothing.
Grandma told the boy you see the field. You see i planed seed all over this feild. I gave you the bucket with the holes because as you walk the water in your bucket water the seeds.
You thought because of the holes sin caused in your life that you were useless. You thought because of your failure you should have been put on a shelf.
Truth is you are in a good spot to be used by God.
The badness of David versus the Goodness of God.
The badness of you versus the goodness of God. My badness is no match for Gods goodness.
David also makes 4 statements that refer to his sin:
But there are 24 statements David makes towards the Goodness of God
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love,
according to your great compassion,
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity,
cleanse me from my sin.
Surely you desire truth in the inner parts,
you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean,
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Hide your face from my sins,
blot out all my iniquity.
Create in me a pure heart,
O God renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence,
or take your Holy Spirit from me
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and grant me a willing spirit,
to sustain me.
Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
the God who saves me…
O Lord, open my lips…
A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;
build up the walls of Jerusalem.
If you been redeem you got a story to tell. Yes i got problems but I got a Purpose.
Sinner telling another Sinner about the one who can make you clean.
liar telling another liar about the truth
theif telling another theif about a provider
cheater telling another cheater about how faithful God is.
backslider telling another back slider about the perfect spouse.
acholic telling another acholic about a fountain so rich and sweet
The William brothers would say
Im just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, about somebody who can save anybody.
Sins put holes in this bucket, but it also put Holes in His hands. Holes in his side.
AND with his stripes.
It better than you think.
You still got a job. you dont quailfy, you got so many strikes that you should have been fired. Yet you still got the Job.
