12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
Debtors - owing money, one morally bound to the performance of any duty, or Delinquent, one who fails in the performance of duty. Forgiving our debtors does not imply that man has the ability to forgive another human being in the same way that God forgives a sinner.
Spiros Zodhiates, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament (Chattanooga, TN: AMG Publishers, 2000).
Living according to the flesh. The flesh wants to live worldly.
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
For
8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
the Spirit you
22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,
5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,
I don’t recall ideas of the flesh as typically being wholesome, safe, or not wasteful.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
For
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
We are apart of God’s family.
15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
For
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
A slave to the Lord comes with the Spirit of adoption and and things that are freely given to us. Very much the opposite for being a slave to sin. Sin only costs, it never gives back.
Spirit
5 Even to them I will give in My house
And within My walls a place and a name
Better than that of sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
That shall not be cut off.
Cry out
36 And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.”
6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
heirs
18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
Inheritance
If indeed
29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
Christ suffer for us all, we suffer with sin in the flesh. Making it to the point where you see the Lord, you will be glorified with Christ in His presence. On earth, we glorify the Lord for the victories through Him.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
and Then we have this verse.
the sufferings
17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,
13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.
19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
For
13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
And we do in some sense. We rest in this when the thought of death approached us as believers. The fear of death, the sting of death, is taken away as a believer. What do you think about this?
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope;
For
17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:
“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”
Adam chose to sin, because of his love for Eve. Creation, from the beginning is by design. The journey of man is not an after thought, but by design. Free will is not an oops by God, but it is by design. God knows all things even though He ponders our paths.
21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Corruption - decay
glorious liberty - Glorious has 2 senses to the meaning, primary to think or recognize, and secondary reputation, praise, honor (true and false), splendor, light, perfection, rewards (temporal and eternal).
Spiros Zodhiates, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament (Chattanooga, TN: AMG Publishers, 2000).
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
We have liberty/freedom through Christ and in Christ.
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.
4 How long will the land mourn,
And the herbs of every field wither?
The beasts and birds are consumed,
For the wickedness of those who dwell there,
Because they said, “He will not see our final end.”
11 They have made it desolate;
Desolate, it mourns to Me;
The whole land is made desolate,
Because no one takes it to heart.
Creation groans.
32 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
We don’t know when Jesus is going to return, but we will have a good idea of the season, by studying the Bible. Revelation
23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
the firstfruits
5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
Even we ourselves groan
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven,
4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
within ourselves
36 nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
the redemption of our body
28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?
Hope that is seen
18 who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”
7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
We have not seen God the Father.
We have not seen Jesus, but we have seen the aroma of Jesus through the Holy Spirit through the works performed through believers lives.
God has a plan.
