Nature itself hiding in shame from what creation had done to it’s creator!
2 different things happening simulatneously:
What the world was doing to Jesus, and what Jesus was doing to the world.
While the world was temporarily taking the life of Christ, Christ was giving the world life ETERNAL.
THE world was shedding the blood of Jesus, God was showering the world with His grace and mercy.
ELOY ELOY LAMA SABCHTANI
Mark 15:33–41 (ESV)
33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”
36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.
38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.
Mark 15:33 ESV
33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
3rd hour - 9th hour 6 hrs TOTAL ......9am to 3pm
DARKNESS BEGAN AT NOON (6TH HR) AND LASTED UNTIL 3PM
Leading up to this darkness, first few hours he made several statements:
1. Father forgive them they know not what they do
2. today you will be with me paradise
3. woman behold your son, son behold your mother
AND THEN this darkness comes
DARKNESS: Phlegon, Roman historian: “In the fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was an extraordinary eclipse of the sun: at the sixth hour, the day turned into dark night, so that the stars in heaven were seen; and there was an earthquake.” (cited in Clarke)
EVEN Pontious Pilate wrote to Ceasar about his darkness!
SUPERNATURAL EVENT
iii. This is especially remarkable because during a full moon – which Passover was always held at – a natural eclipse of the sun is impossible. This was an extraordinary miracle in the heavens.
WHAT IS THIS DARKNESS.....
REPRESENT: WICKEDNESS, JUDGEMENT (weight of God’s wrath towards sin!!)
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
John 1:5 ESV
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
READING ON VERSE 34
Mark 15:34 ESV
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
LAST WEEK WE SAW FULFILLED PROPHECY ON THE CROSS. THE VERY DETAILS OF THE CRUCIFIXION DEPICTED 1000YRS before it happened it was written about in PSALM 22
fulfilled in psalm 22
The crowd passing by REJECTING AND MOCKING2ESV)
Mark 15:29–32 (ESV)
29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
Psalm 22:6–8 (ESV)
6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”
THE CRUCIFIXION ITSELF AND THE ROMAN SOLDIERS DIVIDING HIS CLOTHES
Mark 15:24 ESV
24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.
Psalm 22:16–18 (ESV)
16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet17 I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; 18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
NOW JESUS:
Mark 15:34 ESV
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Psalm 22:1 (ESV)
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
JESUS IS CONFIRMING THE FULFILLMENT OF THIS PROPHECY
GOD DIDN’T SAVE JESUS, SO THAT HE COULD SAVE YOU!!
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
THIS IS WHY JESUS IS TRULY FEELING FORSAKEN! He’s known physically pain, emotional pain....but for the first time ever HE’S FEELING THE SEPARATION from the FATHER that sin does.
TAKING THE SIN OF THE WORLD, THE FULL WEIGHT OF GOD’S JUDGEMENT
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
The death of Jesus on the cross was and is the ultimate demonstration of God’s love towards all mankind Romans 5:8 . It is the power of God unto salvation, though it seems foolish to those who reject it (1 Corinthians 1:18). At the cross, Jesus wiped out our record of sin and rebellion against God, nailing it to the cross (Colossians 2:14).
THE CROSS DEMONSTRATES GOD’S CRAZY LOVE
Romans 5:8 (ESV)
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
THE CROSS DEMONSTRATES GOD’S CRAZY POWER
18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. - 1 Cor. 1:18
THE CROSS DEMONSTRATES GOD’S CRUCIAL CANCELLATION
14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. -Col. 2:14
Mark 15:35–37 ESV
35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.
NORMALLY IMPOSSIBLE....VICTIMS CAN’T BARELY BREATH OR ARE UNCONSIOUS
Mark 15:38 ESV
38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
PICTURE
The veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom: The tearing of the temple veil signified that now man had free access to the throne of grace by the cross and that no one should ever think again that God dwells in temples made with hands.
Significantly, as the wall of separation between God and man was removed, the veil was torn from top to bottom. God tore it from heaven instead of man tearing it from earth.
Hebrews 9:24 ESV
24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
Hebrews 4:16 ESV
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Mark 15:39–41 (ESV)
39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” 40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” 40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
