Instructing a Child's Heart The Importance of Instruction

Instructing a child’s heart is not simply transferring data from parent to child. It is impressing the heart with truth.

Solomon gives this kind of instruction when he says, “My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right. Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path. ( Prov. 25: 15-19 )
Expectations of a Child Rearing
Your greatest need is to understand deep truths from the Bible. Solid parenting skills are built on solid truth.
Instruction you provide not only informs the mind; it is directed to persuading the Heart of the wisdom and truthfulness of God’s Way’s.
We are going to break this down in three parts.
Formative Instruction
Specific Topics
Application of Formative Instruction
Instructing a child’s heart is essential to shepherding a child’s heart. The instruction that you provide not only informs the mind; it is directed to persuading the heart of the wisdom and truthfulness of God’s ways. We should impress truth on the hearts of our children, not to control or manage them, but to point them to the greatest joy and happiness that they can experience—delighting in God and the goodness of his ways.
Call to Formative Instruction
Life is a Classroom
Absence of biblical formative instruction, then secular formative instruction takes over. ( Col. 2:8 )
Two Fundamental Answers
Identify the enemy and acknowledge his troop strength ( 1Pet. 5:8 ).
We are engaged in battle ( Eph. 6:11-12 )
Battle is inside us ( James 4:1 )
Battle outside us ( Eph. 6:12 )
Question; are we inviting secular culture into our homes? ( James 4:4 )
2. We must be skilled ( become ) at using biblical formative instruction as offensive and defensive weapon against the enemy of our children’s souls.( Eph. 6:10-17 ) ((1Pet. 5:8 )
We are responsible to guard our children against the wicked formative instruction of the world. Formative instruction gives children principles and absolutes by which to live—hooks to hang life on. Will they be our hooks or the majority culture’s hooks?
Example: Solomon
Avoid bad counsel and take wise counsel. ( Prov. 1:10 ) ( Prov. 1:5 )
Encourages his sons to purse the path of life. Right path!
Remember!
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Provide biblical formative instruction. “Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
The glorious reality is this—As we battle, we are assured of eternal victory because of a Savior who has already vanquished the foe. Our faltering but determined and confident use of his battle strategy and weaponry will win the day. (1 Corinthians 15:57–58 , 1 Pet. 5:9-10 )
Secular Culture is:
Powerful
Cannot be quarantined. ( Rom. 12:2 )
Identify the Enemy
Who Instructs in Our Majority Culture?
Celebrities
Experts how to live
Electronic Media etc.
Key to this: Advertisers repeat their message. They know that it will take more than one exposure for their message to be absorbed. If it didn’t need repetition, they would create quick and inexpensive ads that aired only once. Advertisers want you to memorize their jingles so that you remember them when you are facing the wall of available products, trying to decide which one to buy! The world gets it! Shaping ideas requires long-term interaction with long-range goals and 100 percent saturation.
