The Purity of God (verse 5)
The Purity of God (verse 5)
“This then is the message … that we declare unto you.”
John’s message was a first-hand account.
That which John received was directly from the Son of God, whom he had personally known, heard, seen and touched.
“God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”
God is completely holy and righteous. There is no shadow or shade of turning, no variableness in his nature. Not Star Wars Theology
Paul said that God’s nature is so pure it makes it impossible for man to approach Him by themselves. 1 Tim. 6:16, “who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light.”
The Practice of Fellowship with God (verses 6-10)
The Practice of Fellowship with God (verses 6-10)
Sin prevents us from having a relationship with God.
John addresses three root problems:
Hypocrisy – Saying we walk with God when we actually walk in darkness. Verse 6
We must come to the light and be exposed (John 3:20-21)
We must look to the cleansing power of Christ’s blood.
Present, continuous action
“There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins, and sinners plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains.
The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day, and there may I, though vile as he, wash all my sins away.
Dear dying Lamb, thy precious blood shall never lose its power, till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more.
E’re since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.”
Self-Righteousness – Thinking that we have arrived (I have no sin) verse 8
It is self-deception. We are blinded to our true condition before God.
It shows a small view of God’s majesty (the Pharisee and the Publican)
We must confess and look to God’s justification! (verse 9)
Apathy – Denying that we have sin and thus denies need for God verse 10
Tries to ignore God and rule our own life. It calls God a liar.
“Me and God have our own thing.”
Many deny that God even exists.
God will not be mocked, the apathetic will be exposed as a fraud.
See what sin cost the Lord (THE CROSS)
The Provision for Fellowship (verses 2:1-2)
The Provision for Fellowship (verses 2:1-2)
God’s grace does not give us license to sin, but it gives us freedom from sin.
Our When we do sin, Christ is our Advocate with the Father.
He pleads our case before the Father.
This He can do because He is Jesus Christ, the Righteous!
He ever lives to make intercession for us! Hebrews 7:25 “Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
Christ is the Propitiation for our Sin
He is the means by which our sins are covered (atoned for) and removed.
He is our Mercy Seat, our place of connection with God.
