ILLUST - Given ultimate freedom - GIFT CARD
How about a real example of serious spiritual “stuck-ness”
Psalm 107:10–12 NASB95
There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help.
Someone needed to do something about this bondage resulting from rebellion against God - called SIN
READ John 19:1-30, reflecting on the crucifixion
“The Truth will make you free”
John 8:32 NASB95
and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
This section of John
Our freedom being secured by Truth
“It is finished” - maybe the most powerful Words in Scripture
Set free from the bondage of sin
So why do we resist the freedom offered and secured?
?? Or why do we tend to keep running back to bondage?
Truth on trial - pronounced guilty by the wicked
Sentenced to die
As if…you can kill TRUTH….

Truth Offers Freedom

Three freedoms in particular

1) Freedom to Know Yahweh/Jesus

Adam and Eve were given the freedom to know good and evil, and they chose to covet being like God - tempted as though they were “missing” something
Yahweh provided “rules’ so we could truly know ourselves, and know Him
Jesus was tested a lot on the Law - He summarized the 10 Commandments, broke them down, summarized by actions toward God and toward others
(4 and 6)
Galatians 3:24 NASB95
Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
The law is the tutor to bring us to Christ
And Christ did what He did to give us victory over sin, leaving the Holy Spirit to guide us
His sacrifice/crucifixion - how can we look at that through the Law?
(10 Commandments image)
1 - No other gods before me
2 - No idols/likenesses to worship
3 - Not misuse God’s name
4 - Remember the Sabbath Day - given to His people to rest from work, yeah, but mainly to WORSHIP - not sleep in
5 - Honor father and mother
6 - Not murder
7 - Not adultery
8 - Not steal
9 - No false witness
10 - Not covet
ALL of these, can affect each one of us
We can all be faced with the chance to break any or all of them - Jesus expanded on them, too
And Jesus paid the ultimate price to give us that choice, resulting in freedom

2) Freedom to Choose Priorities

Galatians 5:1 NASB95
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Look at the list in verse 19-20 of Gal. 5
Look at the list in 1 Cor. 6:9-10
Or 2 Cor. 12:20 list - the reality that some may not repent
Bible is FULL of the stuff we like to do as sinners, or fall back to when we lose focus on Jesus
And Jesus offers us freedom from these!
Yeah, check out Gal. 5:22-24
…wait, there’s more…
How about 1 Cor. 6:11?

3) Freedom to Repent

Jesus did not leave us in our sin - though He could have, and we deserve that
The cell door is open
The chains are gone
He’s done what He said He would - FINISHED!
Two aspects of repentance - reliant on truth
Salvation
TRUTH says we are sinners, lost, on the way to eternal separation - Hell
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NASB95
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Romans 10:13 NASB95
for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Without the TRUTH doing all this, we are hopeless, helpless
When did you confess/admit the truth, accept the truth, and give your life to the truth?
Sanctification
A choice - we do not have license to go on sinning
Christian freedom is freedom to serve, not freedom to sin.
John Stott (English Preacher)
Sin bothers the believer - the Holy Spirit makes sure of that
2 Peter 3:18 NASB95
but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Freedom from sin means freedom to decide to grow in grace and knowledge
Daily “cleansing” - 1 John 1:9
1 John 1:9 NASB95
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
All that Jesus has done, was done to bring us to the Father
leave behind our old self,
and get equipped to live for Him
Claiming to be “Christian” does not cut it
Jesus said “IT IS FINISHED!”
Not so we could live some lukewarm mediocre “Christian” life
HE GAVE IT ALL - SO WE COULD, TOO!
Freedom was attacked when the TRUTH was crucified
What the enemy failed to realize was that crucifying the TRUTH gave birth to our Freedom
“The truth will (WILL) make you free”
Romans 6:4 NASB95
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
The path is there for you to walk in newness of life
EASY - live by a bunch rules
HARD - live by Freedom, discerning, wise choices
Freedom from the Law does not mean freedom from God but freedom for God.
Leon Morris
You are FREE
To live for you
Or to live for Him
If you decide to live for you - He’ll let you, and you get to answer for that
If you decide to live for Him - He’ll HELP you, and He will answer for you
