Psalm Reading

Psalm 69:27–29 ESV
Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high!

Matthew 8:1–17 ESV
When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment. And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

A Leper Cleansed

Matthew 8:1–4 ESV
When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
See Luke 5:12-16
Leprosy
Pain in areas of the body
Followed by numbness
Skin loses its original colour
Skin becomes thick, glossy and scaly
Swelling and poor blood flow
Fingers and toes fall off or are absorbed
Eye brows and eye lashes fall out
Pungent smell
Voice becomes grating and hoarse
Spread by skin contact
Leprosy was considered a curse and a sign of punishment for sin & incurable by man
Leviticus 13 & 14 - Method of priest detecting leprosy, their isolation and offerings in connection with the cleansing of a leper
Old testamant examples of God curing leprosy
Lepers would not normally approach people, and heavily ostracised (Luke 17:12 - 10 lepers)
Leprosy was very common, and multiple accounts of Jesus healing them
This account:
Linked to Luke 5:12-16
Luke 5:12–16 ESV
While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.
Leper comes right up to Jesus and knelt/bowed before Him
He puts everything into this act of reverance
“Lord, if you will, you can make me clean”
“Lord” he meant far more than “Sir”
He is sure of Jesus’ power to heal even a leper of an advanced stage
His statement: A form of confession of faith
Upon what this faith is based we are unsure - jesus words? his miracles? Fulfilment of Messianic prophecies?
Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.
Jesus shows compassion
“If you will” receives the response “I will”
“be clean” and he was made clean immediately
The restoration was immediate and complete
Jesus heals the unlovely and unpraiseworthy
Matthew 8:4 ESV
And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
In accordance with the Law of Moses
Examined by the Priesthood and pronounced cured of his leprosy and qualified to bring the required offering
Showed Jesus’ respect for Mossianic Law
The priests would, despite their rejection of Him, testify to his power and authority
Luke confirms that Jesus’ Miracle-working power was fanning the flames of enthusiasm - not yet His time

The Faith of a Centurion

Matthew 8:5–13 ESV
When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.
Not to be confused with John 4:46-54 the Officials Son
The centurion shows awareness of that MIracle in which Jesus heals at a distance
Is this linked to Luke 7:1-10? - Centurion’s dying servant
Although many significant similarities it is also equally different
The similarities may show awareness of the prior occasion, e.g. positive manipulation
Jesus did many things multiple times - twice purged the temple, fed the multitude, fish caught by miracle
Luke (60’s AD) equally also was presenting (a thesis) the key truths to Theophilus (gentile)
Gentile Centurion - Roman
Jesus response is without hesitation
A thrilling, concise and positive assurance
I will come and heal him
“I am not worthy” v8-9
I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me
The centurion lavishes praise on his servant
Servant is obedient to his master
Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.
Combination of love, thoughtfulness, insight, humility, and trust so unlimited
I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus makes clear the Gospel (God’s way of salvation) is for gentiles and Jews alike.
He declares (as predicted by the prophets) that the Jews that reject Him will be thrown out into “the outer darkness” (Hell), A place where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.
Healing was complete and restorative

Jesus Heals Many

Matthew 8:14–17 ESV
And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”
Peter’s mother-in-law
unlikely to be the same occasion
Luke’s account
Sabbath
Invited
Grave fever
Rebukes the fever
She served them all
Matthew’s account
Jesus’ decision
Fever
Touches her hand
She serves Jesus
Matthew shows that Jesus fulfilled the old testament prophesies
Isaiah 53:4 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
