I. Open Hearts to Believers

2 Corinthians 6:11 NASB95
11 Our mouth has spoken freely to you, O Corinthians, our heart is opened wide.
opened = enlarged or made broad. perfect verb means it has been open to you and continues to be open to you.

In other words, “Our hearts are open to you,” said Paul. “Any tension you feel is not the result of anything we feel toward you, but the result of your own emotions.”

2 Corinthians 6:12 NASB95
12 You are not restrained by us, but you are restrained in your own affections.
2 Corinthians 6:13 NASB95
13 Now in a like exchange—I speak as to children—open wide to us also.
open wide = same root as in vs. 11 but in the imperative form. He is making a demand of them.

II. Closed Hearts to Sin

A. Don’t Join with Unbelievers

2 Corinthians 6:14 (NASB95)
14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers;
Deuteronomy 22:10 NASB95
10 “You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.
ox - clean animal, donkey - unclean animal

In Morality

2 Corinthians 6:14 (NASB95)
14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness,

In Revelation

2 Corinthians 6:14 (NASB95)
14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?

In Leadership

2 Corinthians 6:15 (NASB95)
15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial?
Belial = Worthless or wicked
Believer’s Bible Commentary L. Paul’s Appeal for Scriptural Separation (6:14–7:1)

Can there ever be peace between Christ and Satan? Obviously not! Neither can there be fellowship between a believer and an unbeliever. To attempt it is treason against the Lord.

In Faith

2 Corinthians 6:15 (NASB95)
15 or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?

In Worship

2 Corinthians 6:16 NASB95
16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

B. Be Separate from the World

2 Corinthians 6:17 NASB95
17 “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord. “And do not touch what is unclean; And I will welcome you.
This is a quote from Isaiah:
Isaiah 52:11 NASB95
11 Depart, depart, go out from there, Touch nothing unclean; Go out of the midst of her, purify yourselves, You who carry the vessels of the Lord.
Be set apart, But it does not mean that we isolate:
Luke 7:34 NASB95
34 “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

III. Open Hearts to the Father

2 Corinthians 6:18 NASB95
18 “And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.
If we fail to Separate from the world do stop being God’s sons and daughters? No. We are still His children, but we will limit the blessings and intimacy that He wishes to give us.

If I wanted to take my family out to dinner, but my kids were all muddy from playing outside, I’d say, “I want to take you out to dinner. Go wash up.”

Now, if they responded by saying, “We don’t want to wash. We like this mud,” they’d still be my children, but I couldn’t take them out for dinner.

2 Corinthians 7:1 NASB95
1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Believer’s Bible Commentary L. Paul’s Appeal for Scriptural Separation (6:14–7:1)

McCheyne, “Lord, make me as holy as it is possible for a man to be on this side of heaven.”
