Bible Reading Week 41
This Week’s Theme: Looking After Your New Family
Word for the Week is Family: A unit ordained by God for the comfort and protection of its members. It is usually a group of relatives, but the people of God are also seen as a family.
Memory verse: Galatians 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
Sermon Passage: Genesis 4:1-12
Genesis 4:10–12 NKJV
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. 11 So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
INTRO:
God expects us to look after our new family members
Don’t be a family member like Cain

I. HE WAS NOT GENUINE

Genesis 4:1–5 NKJV
1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” 2 Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
CAIN WAS THE FIRST SON
ABEL WAS THE YOUNGER SON
CAIN WAS A FARMER
ABEL WAS A SHEPHERD
THEY BOTH PREPARED AN OFFERING TO THE LORD
CAIN’S CAME FROM PRODUCE
ABLE’S CAME FROM THE FIRST-BORN OF HIS FLOCK
GOD APPROVED ABEL’S OFFERING
GOD DID NOT REGARD CAIN’S OFFERING
WHY?
DID HE DO SOMETHING WRONG?
THE WRITER OF HEBREW TESTIFIED THAT IN CHAPTER 11 VERSE 4 THAT
Hebrews 11:4 NKJV
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.
Numbers 16:14–15 NKJV
14 Moreover you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up!” 15 Then Moses was very angry, and said to the Lord, “Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I hurt one of them.”
Isaiah 1:11–15 NKJV
11 “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats. 12 “When you come to appear before Me, Who has required this from your hand, To trample My courts? 13 Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies— I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting. 14 Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them. 15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.
Just like the people in Isaiah’s day
I believe CAIN
HE OFFERED GIFTS WITHOUT GENUINENESS
HE OFFERED ALMS WITHOUT AUTHENTICITY
HE OFFERED RITUALS WITHOUT BEING REAL
HE OFFERED A SACRIFICE WITHOUT SINCERITY
CAIN SHOWED
disrespect for the holy
disregard for the pure
AND disdain for the virtuous
LISTEN TO THIS VERSE FROM THE WISDOM LITERATURE
Proverbs 11:3 NKJV
3 The integrity of the upright will guide them, But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.
DOES NOT THIS DESCRIBE CAIN’S SITUATION
DURING THE DAYS OF MOSES
CALEB, WHO WAS ONE OF THE MEN WHO SPIED OUT THE PROMISE LAND
HE WAS DIFFERENT
Numbers 14:24 NKJV
24 But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.
THIS MORNING GOD IS CALLING YOU TO BE REAL like Christ
1 Peter 2:22 NKJV
22 “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”;
BE GENUINE
BE SINCERE
BE A PERSON OF INTEGRITY
YOUR YES SHOULD MEAN YES
AND YOUR NO SHOULD MEAN NO
ARE YOU PRESENTING YOUR BODY AS A LIVING SACRIFICE
HOLY AND ACCEPTABLE TO THE LORD
ARE YOU LOVING THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, SOUL, MIND, AND STRENGTH
ARE YOU OFFERING CLEAN HANDS AND A PURE HEART TO THE LORD
THIS IS THE ONLY
DON’T BE FAKE BE REAL

II. HE WAS NOT A GUIDE

Genesis 4:5–7 NKJV
5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. 6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
CAIN HARMED HIS BROTHER INSTEAD OF HELPED
HE LIED IN WAIT INSTEAD OF LIFTING HIS BROTHER UP
JESUS SAID IN Matthew 5:22 “22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.”
WE ARE CALLED TO GUIDE OTHERS TO CEASE FROM ANGER AND FORSAKE WRATH
PAUL TOLD THE CHURCH IN EPHESUS
Ephesians 4:26–27 NKJV
26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.
HAVE YOU SET A BAD EXAMPLE FOR OTHER CHRISTIAN
HAVE YOU GOTTEN UPSET WITH OTHERS WHEN YOU ARE THE ONE IN FAULT
HAVE YOU GOTTEN ANGRY WHEN SAINTS CORRECT YOU
HAVE YOU MADE EXCUSES FOR YOUR SINS
Christ Said
John 13:15 NKJV
15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
Peter said about Christ
1 Peter 2:21 NKJV
21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
Paul told the church
1 Corinthians 4:16 NKJV
16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me.
I URGE YOU AS PAUL URGE TIMOTHY
1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
GUIDE OTHERS IN THE RIGHT WAY
SHOW THEM HOW TO BE A CHRISTIAN A CHRIST FOLLOWER
MODEL THE RIGHT LANGUAGE
THE RIGHT EMOTIONS
THE RIGHT THINKING
THE RIGHT ATTITUDE
THE RIGHT DESIRES
THE RIGHT ACTIONS
HE WAS NOT GENUINE
HE WAS NOT A RIGHTEOUS GUIDE
AND

III. HE WAS NOT A GUARD

Genesis 4:8–9 NKJV
8 Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
He should have protected his brother like
Jonathan protected David from his father King Saul
BUT INSTEAD HE KILLED HIS BROTHER
IN THE NEW TESTAMENT BOOK OF FIRST JOHN
JOHN THE BELOVED DISCIPLE INSTRUCTED US TO LOVE EACH OTHER BUT NOT LIKE CAIN WHO
1 John 3:12 NKJV
12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
ABEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TRUST HIS BROTHER
ABEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BELIEVE HIS BROTHER’S MOTIVE WERE PURE WHEN HE CALLED FOR HIM
Pesa (transgression): crime; offence concerning property; wantonness; misdemeanor; wrongdoing
evildoing — the violation of a law or a duty or moral principle
rebellion — refusal to accept some authority or code or convention
CHRISTIANS ARE are called to TO BE THE TYPE OF FAMILY THAT
Serve one another.                  Galatians 5:13
Accept one another                   Romans 15–7
SO Support God’s family, don’t sabotage it
Forgive one another                  Colossians 3:13
Be devoted to one another       Romans 12:10
SO Act with care and compassion, not envy and anger.”
Honor one another                     Romans 12:10
Encourage one another            1 Thessalonians 5: 11
Be a voice of encouragement, not an instrument of death
Build up your family, don’t bring them harm like Cain did.”
OTHER SAINTS LIKE THE HOUSEHOLD OF STEPHANAS WHO IN PAUL’S DAY DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO THE MINISTRY OF THE SAINTS
1 Corinthians 16:18 NKJV
18 For they refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge such men.
LIKE EPAPHROPITUS
Philippians 2:30 NKJV
30 because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.
Be the kind of sibling who uplifts, not one who tears down.
Choose love and unity over jealousy and division.”
Cultivate kindness in your family, not resentment like Cain.”
Be the sibling who fosters peace, not strife.”

DON’T BE FAKE
